The Virginia Tech men's and women's tennis teams successfully defended their Atlantic 10 Conference championships Sunday in Blacksburg.
The 23rd-ranked Tech men (19-4) defeated Temple 5-0, and the women routed George Washington 4-0.
Tech's Aaron Marchetti was named the A-10 men's performer of the year. He was joined on the all-conference squad by teammates Oliver Mayo, Marek Pfeil (Blacksburg High School) and Andrew Kraft.
Six Hokies women earned all-conference honors. Sabrina Pardo, Vanessa Pardo, Katherine Chen, Antonella Pozzi, Daria Ivan and Majka Serafini were named to the first team, and Anne Jones was named coach of the year.
BASEBALL
Shifflett propels Hokies to sweep
Eric Shifflett had four hits and drove in three runs as Virginia Tech completed a three-game sweep of Dayton with a 13-4 victory in Atlantic 10 action in Blacksburg.
Tech (24-22 overall, 10-5 conference) pounded out 20 hits and scored in every inning. The Hokies got three-hit days from Matt Griswold, Matt Reynolds (William Byrd), Ryan Brittle (Radford) and Randy Martin.
VMI: Furman's D.J. Bissinger went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in as the Paladins beat the Keydets 9-5 in Greenville, S.C., to complete a sweep of their weekend Southern Conference series.
Radford: Jason Anderson (Glenvar) struck out 13 batters, but the Highlanders lost 3-2 to UNC Asheville in a Big South Conference game. Anderson (6-6) yielded three runs in the fourth inning on a hit batsman, a walk and two hits. Radford is 22-22 overall and 8-7 in league play.
LACROSSE
Terps women edge Cavs
Sascha Newmarch scored four goals, including the game-winner with 2:45 remaining, as top-ranked Maryland (14-0) beat Virginia 11-10 to win the ACC women's tournament in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers' Kate Evans had tied the score at 10 with her fourth goal of the day. Fourth-ranked UVa (12-4) missed two potential tying shots in the closing minutes.
VMI: Kevin Johnson scored three goals to lead Ohio State past the Keydets 11-7 in Lexington. Rob Worrell (Rockbridge County) scored three goals for VMI (1-10), and Kevin and Tim Johnson each had three goals for the Buckeyes (6-4).
SOFTBALL
Radford splits in Big South
Freshman Mary Price smacked a two-out, three-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead Radford (23-29, 4-10) past Coastal Carolina 4-3 in the first game of a Big South doubleheader in Radford. The Chanticleers (23-28, 6-6) came back to win the nightcap 6-4.
Dixie tournament: North Carolina Wesleyan scored three runs in the first and sixth innings to beat Ferrum 9-5 in the consolation bracket in Danville.

Hippensteel reaches final
Roanoke's K.J. Hippensteel won two matches to advance to the final of a U.S. Tennis Association Mid-Atlantic Region tournament at Four Seasons Tennis Club in Merrifield.
Hippensteel, the top seed in the boys' 18-and-under division, beat Greg Zielinski of Maryland 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round and defeated York Allen of McLean 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a semifinal. Hippensteel will meet Ramez Qamr of Fairfax in the final today.
