ALL-AMERICA CITY HOPEFULS ANNOUNCED

Abingdon is one of 30 finalists for the award.

The National Civic League named 30 finalists Monday, including Abingdon, Va., for the 1997 All-America City Award, an honor given to communities for exemplary grass-roots problem solving.

The 48-year-old award is given to 10 communities each year for their efforts in dealing with community issues.

Finalists are scattered throughout 18 states, including:

California - Baldwin Park, Camptonville, Fremont and Sacramento.

Colorado - Denver, Hillside Neighborhood (Colorado Springs) and Longmont.

Connecticut - New Haven.

Illinois - Ohio.

Indiana - Fort Wayne.

Iowa - Bonaparte.

Kansas - Wichita.

Maryland - Aberdeen.

Massachusetts - Lowell.

Missouri - Lee's Summit and St. Joseph.

New York - Bronx County (Borough), Niagara County and Rochester.

North Carolina - Asheville, Gastonia, Kinston and Statesville.

North Dakota - Bismarck.

Ohio - Wooster.

Oregon - Grants Pass.

South Carolina - Aiken and Florence.

Texas - Texas City.

Virginia - Abingdon.
