LIBERTY AD STEPS DOWN

Liberty University athletic director Chuck Burch announced his resignation Monday to accept a similar position at Gardner-Webb University.

Burch, who has been Liberty's AD since 1990, is a 1979 graduate of Gardner-Webb. A replacement for Burch is expected to be announced today.

Stallings hospitalized

Former Alabama coach Gene Stallings remained hospitalized in Paris, Texas, after he was trampled by three horses on his ranch. He was listed in good condition after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured hip Sunday.

``It was a dumb thing to do,'' Stallings, 62, told The Paris News about Sunday morning's accident. ``I was feeding three young colts at the same time and each was afraid he wouldn't get to eat. One knocked me down and I landed on my hip.''

Stallings said he's been told he'll need a wheelchair and a walker for about three months.

Buccaneers sign White: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Virginia Tech standout Cornelius White to a free-agent contract.

HORSE RACING

Lukas shut out of Derby

For the first time since 1980, trainer D. Wayne Lukas won't have an entry in the Kentucky Derby.

Lukas, who has won the past two Derbys and seven of the past eight Triple Crown races, said he will be a spectator for the 123rd Kentucky Derby on May 3.

Lukas nominated 23 3-year-olds for the Derby. His top contender, juvenile champion Boston Harbor, broke his left foreleg in February, dropping him out of the Derby picture.

Costa wins Godo Open

Albert Costa defeated Albert Portas 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to win the rain-delayed final of the Seat Godo Open in Barcelona, Spain.
