OBIT

COMBS, John Daniel, 82, a long-time resident of Warrenton, died on Sunday, April 20, 1997, at the home of his daughter in Roanoke. He was born April 17, 1915 in Washington County, the son of the late Frederick Paul and Mamie Alice Dutton Combs. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as an aviation instrumentation specialist. After his tour of duty, he relocated to Warrenton, where he worked as a master electrician for Walter Chrysler at North Wales. He then became a licensed electrical contractor and later was employed by the federal government at Warrenton Training Center. He retired from the Training Center in 1979 as Maintenance Superintendent, responsible for supervising buildings and grounds maintenance operations at the center's four U.S. Government installations. Throughout his life he was also active in his community and church. He was a member of the Marshall Chapter #101, Order of the Eastern Star, and in May, 1996 became a 50-year member of the Masonic Fraternity, as a member of Mt. Carmel Lodge No. 133 in Warrenton. He was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where he held a variety of volunteer and leadership positions over the years. Among them were Chairman of the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees and Parsonage Committee, Superintendent and Adult Class Teacher of the Sunday School, member of the Building Committee and the Adult Choir. He was preceded in death May 21, 1996, by his beloved wife of 47 years, Helen Scott Minter Combs. He is survived by a daughter, Helene Combs Dreiling; son-in-law, John W. Dreiling; and three grandchildren, Marshall, Joanna and Warren Drieling, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Dora Lynn Fleenor, Charlotte, N.C. and Nell C. Clark, Abingdon; and by a large extended family. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Ave., Warrenton, where a Masonic Service will be held at 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at Moser Funeral Home Chapel by the Reverend Barbara J. Minter. Interment will be in the Orlean Cemetery, Orlean. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. CONNER, Lester William, 49, of Bent Mountain, died Sunday, April 20, 1997 in a Salem hospital. Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca ``Becky"" Conner; former wife, Bonnie G. Conner both of Roanoke; his mother, Cora J. Conner of Bent Mountain; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Betty Conner, Bent Mountain; a sister and brother-in-law, Jo-Ann and Larry Hartman, Boones Mill; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Restvale Cemetery, Copper Hill with the Rev. Fleet Powell officiating. GRADE, Leo Thomas, 42, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, April 19, 1997 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Radford, Va. on June 28, 1954. He is survived by two sons, Leo Purnell and Jaron Tyree Grade, both of Baltimore, Md.; his parents, Thomas and Clayta F. Grade; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Stanley Grade and Joie and Debra Grade, all of Baltimore, Md.; a grandchild, Monisha Tynae Grade, Baltimore, Md.; his maternal grandmother, Flora Fears, Blacksburg; and a devoted girlfriend, Laura P. LAUGHON, Violet Lewis, 87, of Salem, passed away Monday, April 21, 1997. She was a longtime member of Ridgewood Baptist Church; and was preceded in death by her son, Richard D. Laughon; husband, William W. Laughon. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Sarah (Sally) Laughon, Roanoke; grandchildren, Barry S. and Sar ah Laughon, Atlanta, Ga., Christopher S. and Leigh Anne Laughon, Roanoke, Matthew M. OVERSTREET, Clarence Virgil, 94, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, April 19, 1997 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born December 26, 1902 in Bedford County, a son of the late Albert Gordon Overstreet and Mary Lucy Dooley Overstreet. His wife was the late Maggie Elizabeth Orange Overstreet. He was a member of the Christian Life Ministries. He is survived by two sons, Virgil Clifton Overstreet, Gary Martin Overstreet, both of Bedford; two brothers, Thomas A. Overstreet, Roanoke, Eddie J. Overstreet, Hardy; four sisters, Nannie Bernice Niday, Bluefield, W. Va., Lucy Pearl Kingery, Mary Jerline Divers, both of Vinton, Frances Elizabeth Thibeau, Harrington, Maine; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, April 22, 1997, at 2 p.m. from the Virginia Memorial Park, by the Rev. Edward A. Richardson. PERDUE, Mary Johnson, 100, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Monday, April 21, 1997. She was the widow of William J. Perdue and a long time member of Ninth Street Church of the Brethren. Survivors include a beloved great-great nephew, Charles W. Perdue, Jr.; a neice, Nellie Creasy, Whispering Pines, N.C.; a nephew, Hugh Johnson, Franklin Co.; a grea t-nephew, Thomas E. Perdue; several great-great-neices and nephews including, Michelle D. Perdue, Ricky L. Perdue; great-great-great-neices, Jessica Leigh Perdue and Mary Elizabeth Perdue. Funeral services will be 1:30 p. m. Wednesday, April 23, 1997 from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. The Rev. Paul White and the Rev. Graham Sowers will officiate. PERDUE, Virginia Weston, 82, of Roanoke County, passed away Monday, April 21, 1997, in a local hospital. She was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Herman W. Perdue of Roanoke County; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Cara Perdue, Roanoke County; four gra ndsons and their wives, David and Denise Perdue of Westerville, Ohio, Greg and Cindy Perdue, Robert and Jennifer Perdue, Jeffrey and Allyson Perdue, all of Roanoke; one great-granddaughter, Kristen Nicole Perdue of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Cecil and Ralph Barnhart; sister-in-law, Irene Dillon of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 3 p.m. Wednesday, with Dr. Woodrow Clark and the Rev. Robert M. Hamner officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. POULOS, Helen Contos, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 20, 1997, at her home. She was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos. Mrs. Poulos was co-owner (along with her family) of d. j.'s Brasserie Restaurant, where she was well known for greeting all those who entered. Prior to her current business, she was the co-founder of the Charcoal Steak House, which she and her husband ran from 1956 to 1972. She was a member of the Daughters of Evrytania Association. Mrs. Poulos was preceded in death by a son, Paul James Poulos; her parents, Gus A. and Virginia V. Contos; a brother; and two sisters. Surviving are he r husband, James Paul Poulos; a son, Deno D. Poulos; a daughter, Rita A. Poulos, all of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Maria Elena Poulos, Winston Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Katherine C. Roupas, Charlotte, N.C., Mary K. Rucker, Roanoke, Bertha C. Contos, Fayetteville, N.C.; many nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon, Wednesday from Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with the Rev. George Chioros officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (30 Huntington Blvd. N.E., Roanoke, VA 24012). The family will receive friends at Mrs. Poulos's home from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and a trisagion service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from the home.

PRUNTY, Mildred Dodson, 65, of Martinsville, died Monday, April 21, 1997 at home. She was born in Henry County, Va. on March 9, 1932 to the late James Dodson and Dollie Mack Dodson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer E. Prunty. Mrs. Prunty was a member of the Rocky Mount Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Surviving include her four daughters, Mrs. Marcella Jones, Miss Taffie Prunty, Mrs. Carolyn Hubbard, and Miss Sharon Prunty all of Martinsville; one son, Kenneth Prunty of Martinsville; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Leach of Chester, Penn. and Mrs. Nannie M. Jacks of Youngstown, Ohio; three brothers, Robert Dodson of Wilmington, Del., James Spencer of Wilmington, Del., and Joe B. Dosson of Roanoke, Va.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Cremation will be in Westminster Gardens, Greensboro, N.C. Graveside services will be private. Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, at Kingdom Hall, Rocky Mount, Va. with Brother Rodger Carter officiating. The family will receive friends at the home on Bent Tree Lane. REASER, Emory J., 85, of Princeton, W.Va., died Saturday, April 19, 1997 in a Princeton hospital. He was the son of the late Andrew J. and Rosa B. Morehead Reaser. He retired as manager of the Princeton operation of Columbia Gas Company after 41 years of service. He was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Princeton. He was also very active in several social and civic organizations and was a former Mayor and City Councilman for the city of Princeton. He was an avid HAM Radio Operator and his call sign was W8GCZ. He shared his knowledge and taught his amateur radio skills to many people in this area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Howard Reaser; two sisters; and one brother. Survivors inlcude one son, Emory J. ``Buddy"" Reaser and his wife, Kay of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Rosanna Reaser of Princeton, W.Va. and Radford, Va.; one grandson, Michael Howard Reaser of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Mary Cary of Lewisburg, W.Va. and Alma Ridout of Richmond. Funeral services were conducted 7 p.m. Monday at the George W. Seaver Funeral Home Chapel in Princeton with the Rev. Clifford Schell officiating. Graveside services and burial will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg, W.Va. REID, Gilbert Ellsworth, , 80, of Goodview, passed away Sunday, April 20, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Emily M. Reid; sons, Gilbert E. Reid, Jr., Charles Allen Reid and Tony Douglas Reid; a daughter, Florine Elsie Reid; brothers, Cecil Reid, Milton Reid, and M. W. Reid; sisters, Florine Hall, Mildred Clark, Doris Yaurin and Phyllis Saunders. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. SNELLINGS, Joseph Lee, Sr., 76, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, April 20, 1997. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Snellings was a dear & loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne Edward Snellings and Joseph L. Snellings Jr. He is survived by his wife of 56 years , Margaret W. Snellings; daughters, Virginia Barbour and Louise Snyder; sons, James R. Snellings, Ronald L. Snellings Sr., Charles F. Snellings and Roger Overstreet; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles R. Snellings, Ernest F. Snellings, Thomas E. Snellings. STEVENS, Monica Ruth, 18, of Troutville, passed away Saturday, April 19, 1997. She was a Senior at Lord Botetourt High School, where she was active in the National Honor Society, SCA, Key Club, Forensics, Principal's Scholar, VHSL Award, Math Teacher's Aide, Colorguard, a Soprano in the Advanced Choir, Cavalier Singers, Soccer Team Manager and I Act and III Act Plays. Monica was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, where she was President of the Youth Group and was active with the United Methodist District Youth Activities, Appalachian Service Project and was a Camp Alta Mons volunteer. Monica was also active with the Attic Production Plays, Festival in the Park, worked at Bella's Pizza in Troutville and baby-sat for neighbors. Monica was accepted at Roanoke College, where she was looking forward to a career as a Math teacher. Monica is survived by her parents, Mike and Carol Stevens; one sister, Bethamy Lea Stevens, all of Troutville; her grandparents, E. C. and Ruth Showalter of Weyers Cave, Ruth Stevens of Roanoke; and loved by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at the Rader Daleville Chapel, with Dr. Gene M. Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Daleville Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

WEBB, Kate Foster, 94, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. She was born on March 1, 1903, to the late Lorn L. and Martha Troutt Lugar in Craig County. She was a longtime member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Christiansburg. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas L. Foster and M. Frank Webb; two daughters, Lucy Foster, and Frances Foster Jones; a granddaughter, Brenda Lynn Jones; a sister, Thelma Layman; and a brother, Frank Lugar. Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Howard Smith, Paint Bank, Norine and Kenneth Wills Sr., Christiansburg, Mae and Eugene Helems, New Castle, Mary and Harry Taylor, Newport, Eva and Art Daniel, Emerald Isle, N.C.; a son-in-law, Lyman J. Jones Sr., Christiansburg; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Zana and Frances Albert, McCoy; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Kelly and Martha Webb, Concord, Willis and Virginia Webb, Christiansburg; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 12 stepgrandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a sister, Maude Humphreys, Salem; two nieces; and three nephews.
