IN SERVICE

Narrows native Kenneth D. Perdue has been awarded a Letter of Commendation and the Navy Unit Commendation for supporting the search and recovery efforts of TWA Flight 800. Perdue is a Navy fireman and was assigned to the dock landing ship USS Oak Hill. His ship was assigned in July to assist the National Transportation Safety Board in locating and recovering the plane's wreckage and its victims off the coast of Long Island, N.Y. Perdue's ship served as the afloat command post and at-sea base of operations for the Navy support operation for almost three months.

Perdue graduated from Narrows High School in 1993 and joined the Navy in August 1993.

Sgt. Steven L. Feeny of Radford has been promoted to his present rank after graduating from the noncommissioned officers academy at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Feeny is assigned to the 31504 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He is the son of James and Elsie Feeny of Radford.

Jeff A. Lancour has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He recently graduated from Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. Lancour graduated from Auburn High School in 1981. He is the son of Beverly Morris of Pearisburg and Eugene Lancour of Christiansburg.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Chris R. Gallimore has changed home ports as a crew member aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. The carrier left Alameda, Calif., to make the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., its new home port. He graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1993 and joined the Navy in June 1994. He is the son of Martha Moody of Pulaski and Mike Gallimore of Christiansburg.

Navy Seaman Recruit Joel T. Barrow has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Barrow graduated from Radford High School in 1996.

Marine Pvt. Jose Cruz has competed the Heavy Vehicle Operators course. The course is with the Marine Corps Detachment, U.S. Army Engineer School, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Cruz graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1994 and joined the Marine Corps in July 1996. He is the son of Milagros Amaro of Pulaski.

Army Pvt. Marc A. McCroskey recently arrived at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla., to begin One Station Unit Training. The training includes basic military training and advanced individual training. McCroskey is the son of Noel McCroskey of Narrows.

Marine Sgt. Maj. Clifton R. Sisson has been promoted to his present rank. He serves with the 2nd Supply Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is the son of Julius and Evelyn Sisson of Shawsville.

Navy Airman Recruit Donald D. Sampson has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Sampson is the son of Mi-Sun and Donald Sampson Sr. of Radford. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1995.

Jennifer D. Paiva, a senior at Shawsville High School, has joined the U.S. Army under the Delayed Entry Program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Christiansburg. Paiva will report to Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., for basic military training in June. She is the daughter of Brenda Paiva of Shawsville and Nuno Paiva of Hicksville, N.Y.

Navy Fireman Edwin A. Isaacson is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas aboard the destroyer USS Hayler. Isaacson joined the Navy in July 1994. He is the son of Edwin Isaacson III of Christiansburg.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Laura K. Stellrecht is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf as part of the Middle East Force aboard the destroyer USS Fletcher. She left her home port of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in November. Stellrecht joined the Navy in 1988. She is the daughter of Suzanne and Robert Smith Jr. of Blacksburg.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Sterling P. Silver is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf as part of the Middle East Force aboard the USS Leftwich. Silver graduated from Giles County High School in 1990 and joined the Navy in June 1990. He is the son of Sterling and Jill Silver of Pearisburg.

Air Force Senior Airman Anthony W. Neece has graduated from airman leadership school at Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. Neece is a law enforcement trainer. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1985. He is the son of Harold T. Neece of Christiansburg.
