LECTURE MONDAY AT E&H

A panel discussion on sex and power will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Van Dyke Center at Emory & Henry College.

"Perceptions of Femininity, Masculinity and Power" will be discussed by Hilary Lips, director of the Center for Gender Research at Radford University, and Radford University graduate students Leigh Shannon, Sudie Back Sattler, Claudia Diaz Zuniga and Lori A. Wilson. The presentation is based on their own researches.

Lips' used a sampling of U.S. male and female university students to suggest that it is more difficult for women than men to be perceived positively as a leader or power holder. She also found that women are more likely to anticipate relationship problems involving power positions.

Sattler's and Zuniga's presentations deal with perceptions of power held by male and female students in three cultures - the United States, Spain and Argentina. Wilson found that respondents of both sexes, asked to list people with power, named men more than 5.5 times more frequently than women.
