Another 2,300 tire workers join Goodyear strike

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - An additional 2,300 union workers for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. went on strike Tuesday, walking off their jobs at a Fayetteville, N.C., plant operated by Goodyear subsidiary Kelly-Springfield.

The workers join 12,000 Goodyear employees who walked out at nine plants at midnight Saturday.

Goodyear's Kelly-Springfield unit is seeking a temporary restraining order against the strike, which it considers a violation of the union's agreement with the company, said Richard Evans, a Kelly-Springfield spokesman.

The workers who initiated the strike belong to nine locals that are part of the union's master agreement with Ohio-based Goodyear. The Fayetteville workers have their own contract, which expired Sept. 8.
