RAMS WANT VIRGINIA'S BRICE, ROWE

Two-time All-ACC punter Will Brice and cornerback Joe Rowe apparently have agreed to contract terms with the NFL's St.Louis Rams as free agents, a source close to Virginia's football team said Tuesday.

Another former All-ACC player from UVa, place-kicker Rafael Garcia, has workouts scheduled with Atlanta and at least one other NFL team.

BASEBALL

Radford outslugs JMU

Cris Carr (William Byrd) drove in four runs with a school-record four doubles to lead Radford to a 13-9 non-conference victory over James Madison (23-22) at Dedmon Center Park.

Radford (23-22) squandered an early 8-1 lead by the fifth inning. Jeff Collins homered to tie the score in the fifth. Kelly Dampeer (Northside), who had three hits, drove in the winning run and scored on one of Carr's doubles.

Radford's home game today with Richmond has been postponed until Friday at 3 p.m. Jason Anderson (Glenvar) will start for the Highlanders.

Virginia Tech: Matt Griswold and Casey Martinez had five RBI apiece as the Hokies rolled to a 23-2 non-conference victory over North Carolina A&T in Blacksburg.

Tech (25-22) had 21 hits in its fifth consecutive victory. Griswold homered to raise his season total to 12. Martinez hit a three-run homer.

Rob Simms (3-3) went the distance on a five-hitter.

Washington and Lee: Christian Batcheller tied a Generals single-season record with his eighth home run in W&L's 15-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Lynchburg in Lexington.

Batcheller, a freshman outfielder from Patrick County High School, was 3-for-4 with five RBI for W&L (10-14, 5-6). His three-run double broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning. Batcheller has 41 RBI this season.

Ferrum: The Panthers used 24 hits to clobber host Hampden-Sydney 23-8 in a non-conference game.

Sharron Braxton had five hits and four runs scored and Riley Hodges (Franklin County) added a three-run homer and six RBI to lead Ferrum (27-9). Todd Cunningham added four hits and two RBI and Mike White had three hits and two RBI.

H-SC (4-20) fell behind 18-3 after Ferrum's 12-run third inning.

GOLF

W&L wins ODAC

Tom Dudley and T.J. Wagner's 1-2 finish led Washington and Lee to its third ODAC golf championship in four years at The Crossings in Glen Allen.

Dudley's two-day total of 146 and Wagner's 147 led W&L to a 14-shot victory (604-618) over Guilford. Jay Ingram and Rob Covington added a pair of 156s to round out the seven-man all-tournament team.

Hampden-Sydney was led to a third-place team finish (635) by fourth-place individual finisher John Mears (154).

LACROSSE

Maroons finish with blowout

The Roanoke College men's team concluded its regular season with a 19-7 victory over visiting Radford (4-8). The Maroons, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III, scored eight goals in the fourth quarter to break open an 11-7 game.

Adam Jackson led Roanoke (11-2) with a career-high six goals. Jason Davenport had two goals and four assists.

SOFTBALL

Hokies sweep N.C. A&T

Starting pitchers Michelle Johnson and Allison Weist threw 13 shutout innings to lead Virginia Tech to a doubleheader sweep, 8-0 and 4-0, over North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.

Johnson threw a four-hitter and struck out seven in the first game. Weist threw a school-record two-hitter in the second game and struck out 10.

Kara Krumhardt hit a solo homer for Tech (23-26) in the opener. Jennifer McKibbon hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning of the second game.

New Randolph-Macon AD

Gregg Waters, the head baseball coach at Randolph-Macon College since 1982, will assume additional duties as the school's athletic director beginning July 1.

He replaces Helmut Werner, who wanted to get out of administration and back into coaching soccer full-time at the Ashland school. Waters will lead the search for a head football coach to replace Joe Riccio, who has announced his resignation.

Doughty honored: Former Cave Spring High School athlete Todd Doughty has been named the top cross country/track athlete at William and Mary this season. Doughty received the Randy and Shelby Hawthorne Award. He is ranked nationally in the decathlon and won the Colonial Athletic Association title in the discus.
