Jerusalem housing

The Plowshare Peace & Justice Center will present a program, "Seeds of War in Jerusalem," on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Raleigh Court Library, Grandin Road at Brandon Avenue, Roanoke. The film explores the issues of housing and residency rights in Jerusalem and their effects on Palestinians. Phyllis Bennis, author and fellow in the Peace and Security Program of Washington's Institute for Policy Studies, will lead the discussion.

Well Fields Weekend

The Museum of the Middle Appalachians will hold Well Fields Weekend May 2-4 in Saltville.

Participants will be able to explore the natural and cultural history of the Saltville Valley.

Admission for adults is $15, which will cover the weekend's events and a year's individual membership at the museum.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult but are admitted free.

Va. Field Weekend

The Virginia Museum of Natural History will present its first Virginia Field Weekend May 2-4 at Westmoreland State Park.

The weekend will include guided walks and slide shows about the natural history of the coastal plain of Virginia. Participants should be prepared to hike and even get their feet wet.

One morning will include a side trip to Stratford Hall.

Fees are tiered and range from $100 per person to $170 per person depending on the package

City Art Show entries

Entries for the 18th Annual Roanoke City Art Show must be received by The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge by 3 p.m. on May 16.

The city of Roanoke will fund a $600 Best in Show award, and NationsBank will underwrite five $200 Award of Excellence prizes.

The juror for this year's exhibition, Ruth Beesch of the Weatherspoon Art Gallery in Greensboro, N.C., will lead an informal artists' discussion at 10 a.m. on July 12.

The art show will run July 11 to Sept. 28 in the first-floor gallery of the Art Museum of Western Virginia.

Zoo internship

Mill Mountain Zoo received a grant from the Association of Zoological Horticulture to fund a student internship in zoo horticulture.

A horticulture student or recent graduate will build and maintain a flower and vegetable garden to supplement zoo animal diets. The garden area will also show the interrelationship of plants, animals and their surroundings.

Va. Senior Games

Athletes interested in entering the Virginia Senior Games, formerly the Golden Olympics, need to call the Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department this month for applications.

The games will be held from May 28 to June 1 at the College of William and Mary. Events will include Frisbee toss, bait casting, walking, bridge, biking, bowling, swimming, checkers, golf, tennis, cycling and more.
