YOUR CALL

About ``An ill omen for Virginia's colleges,'' April 16

From BOBBIE JACKSON, Daleville

It saddens and concerns me that Dr. Gordon Davies is being fired. Gov. George Allen is getting bad advice from the hit men he has surrounded himself with. The people of Virginia, and especially the children, must suffer the consequences.

From JOE HAMRICK, Roanoke

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools should suspend Virginia colleges until this matter is cleared up, [as Georgia's state-supported colleges were] in 1941 when [then-Gov.] Eugene Talmadge packed the Board of Regents and fired two professors because of their views on integration.

About ``Born out of wedlock - and, likely into despair,'' April 18

From WILLOW ROSENBLATT, Roanoke

I don't appreciate the bad rap single moms have gotten in the newspaper recently. I am a single mom. I chose to be a single mom. I am in my 20s. My child is well-cared-for. I am well-educated, and in the professional medical community. You should be doing something to show there are good single moms out there like me who are taking good care of their child, and who don't fall into the welfare system.

From ANITA PAGANS, Roanoke

I don't feel you have to be married to have a child and be able to take care of it. But if [a woman] is not able to take care of the child, the child should be taken away. It has nothing to do with whether you're married. If you're going to lay down to make it, then you need to stand up and take care of it.

From DINA HUNT, Roanoke

I'd like to see more done to bring men into the picture. I'd like to see more done about teaching young men to use contraception responsibly.

From MARION WHITE, Ferrum

Why not hold the males that are part of these out-of-wedlock births responsible and accountable for their actions? And when they are under age, hold their parents responsible. Why not a testosterone tax to pay at the age of puberty? Use this tax to support this problem.

About ``Something's rotten in Rocky Mount,'' April 20:

From GARY WHITE, Wytheville

A good editorial about Rocky Mount, if that is, in fact, what's going on down there. I wish you had done research and writing like that when that group called Citizens Against the Prison was roughriding all over everybody in Wythe County.

From MARY COBIA, Rocky Mount

What I'd like for you to do is look at the Franklin County government system as well.

About ``Where the wage of diligence is demotion,'' April 21:

From HAROLD M. MORRIS, Rocky Mount

Thank you for the lowdown on the situation in Rocky Mount. I'm really upset by Pat Hooke's situation, but I'm sure her day is coming. She seems to be a nice lady, and she will be thanked and more than thanked. There are good people in Rocky Mount, and they don't bully ladies.
