For generations we've described workers by the color of their collars: ``blue collar'' for production workers, ``white collar'' for managers, ``pink collar'' for working women.
``Open collar'' now refers to an estimated 40 million Americans who work from home, thanks to computers, fax machines and other electronics. We imagine them still in pajamas while the rest of us, cinched in neckties, are power-lunching.
David Rock, a contractor, has an office in the basement of his house in Roanoke's Raleigh Court, working next to where his wife, Paige, runs a company marketing videos of babies and children. He's often in jeans and a T-shirt, she in sweats.
And on Fridays, when we get to dress casual, David Rock says he's wearing ``anything I want, as usual.'' Want to dress up your workplace vocabulary? Buzz our business editor, John Levin, at 981-3345 or johnl@roanoke.com
