PRICE LEADS SALEM WOMEN TO SOFTBALL TITLE

Carla Price was named most valuable player for Salem's Cheers team, which won the women's Class C American Division Sunday at the Chance Crawford Benefit Softball Tournament.

The event, in its 17th year, drew 216 teams to the Moyer Sports Complex over the weekend.

Other area teams that placed in the tournament included: Jimmy's Automotive of Bedford, third place, men's Class B; Waterworks of Moneta, second, men's Class D; Gene's Team of Rocky Mount, first, and Unexpected of Rocky Mount, second, in the men's recreation division.

|--| Virginia Lift Truck Inc. of Salem rolled a 3,116 over the weekend to take over first place in the scratch division's team event at the Virginia State Bowling Association men's state tournament.

The mark was just seven pins off the state record set last year by Whitehead's Auto of Norfolk. Virginia Lift Truck also moved into seventh place in the handicap division's team event. Rutledge Paint & Body No. 1 of Roanoke remained in second place.

Roanoke's Jeffrey Bower continues to lead the handicap division in the singles event (608). Brian Nimmo is fifth (773), Gerrit Leemkuil is eighth (769), G. Nathan Motley is ninth (760) and Mark Jones is 10th (758).

Bower dropped to second (2,211) in the all-events category behind Harry Key of the Piedmont region (2,254). Jones is third (2,208) and Howard Board of Roanoke is fifth (2,195).

This was the third weekend of the tournament, which runs 10 successive weekends and features more than 6,500 bowlers competing for more than $125,000 in prize money. The team events take place at the Vinton Bowling Center; the singles and doubles events are at Lee Hi Lanes in Salem.

|--| Three members of the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics Level 9 team turned in strong performances at the Region 7 Championships Sunday in Allentown, Pa.

Christine Diffell, competing in the 15-year-old age group, placed third on uneven bars with a 9.125. In the 13-year-old age division, Peggy Daffron and Renee Booker tied for 10th on bars with a 9.10. |--| Martha Snead and Jamie Spradlin of the RVSI Gators posted junior national qualifying times at the YMCA Short-Course Nationals held April 8-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Snead earned her time while placing 14th in the 50-yard freestyle event, while Spradlin was 11th in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
