Refrigerators sold after mid-2001 will have to operate on almost a third less electricity than today's models, the Energy Department said Wednesday. The requirement will save a consumer hundreds of dollars over the life of the appliance.
The new energy efficiency standard for refrigerators has been delayed for three years by squabbles among manufacturers and between manufacturers and the government over how fast the standard should be phased in.
