LAWYERS CHALLENGE POLICE IN BENEFIT

Gauntlet thrown down to Blacksburg's finest to raise funds for Special Olympics.

The "ambulance chasers" are calling the competition a bunch of "cream puffs."

The friendly rivalry between local criminal defense lawyers and the Blacksburg police may get less than friendly on the Kipps Elementary School's basketball court at 7 tonight. The two groups are already hurling verbal jabs in preparation for their benefit bout; a flurry of trash-talking letters have changed hands as well.

Lawyer Christopher Tuck has already claimed victory.

"I was very concerned that we could lose the game until I found out it will be Cream Puff Day at Carol Lee Doughnuts," Tuck said. "Then, I was certain of victory."

Blacksburg police Officer Scott Lau said Tuck and his ambulance-chasing buddies won't even make it to tip-off.

Lau said he "expects" news of an "accident" will spread through the gym about five minutes before tip-off. The number of prospective whiplash cases will be abundant because the news will detail the injured as being riders of a Greyhound Bus and several other vehicles, he said.

"We all know lawyers are ambulance chasers," Lau explained. "All of them will fight to get out the door to hand out their business cards and we'll win by forfeit!"

The good-natured ribbing is all for a good cause as members of the Montgomery-Floyd-Radford Bar Association take on Blacksburg officers on the basketball court to benefit Special Olympics. The game begins at 7 p.m. and admission is a mere $1. The school is at 2801 Prices Fork Road, just past Hethwood.

Tuck said tickets are available from any participating lawyer and the Blacksburg Police Department. They'll also be sold at the door.
