DAVIS, Minnie Ware Moore, 86, of Lexington, died Thursday, April 24, 1997 at her residence. Mrs. Davis was born in Rockbridge Co. on June 30, 1910 and was the daughter of the late Thomas F. Moore and Mary Lila Dixon Moore. She was a retired teacher from Rockbridge and Fairfax Counties, a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church, the Loving Rebekah Lodge #74, Order of Eastern Star #59, Women of the Moose $538, and L.A. P.M. in Clifton Forge. Mrs. Davis was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 1997, in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, with Dr. William Klein officiating. FALLS, Alice Baker Riley, 89, of L exington, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in the Stonewall Jackson Extended Care Facility, Lexington. Mrs. Falls was born in Rockbridge County on October 17, 1907, and was a daughter of the late John William Riley and Rose Plogger Riley. She was a member of the Lexington Baptist Church, and was retired from the Rockbridge Steam Laundry. She was the widow of Harry Lee Falls. She was preceded in death by a son, Melvin S. Falls. Mrs. Falls is survived by two daughters, Myrtle Louise Tyree, Buena Vista, Mary Virginia Myers, Lexington; four sisters, Margaret Coffey, Lexington, Lonnie May Floyd, Buena Vista, Mildred Louise Floyd, Vesuvius, Lucy Catherine Maybaum, White Pine, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 1997, from the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Easter and Rev. HARPER, Alice Marie, 75, of Nashville, N.C., died Thursday, April 24, 1997. She was a native of Charleston, W.Va., and the daughter of the late Herbert and Mary Magdalene Riffee. She is survived by her sons, Clifton Harper and James Harper, both of Rocky Mount, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Morris Moses of Salem, Linda and Philip Compton of Nashville N.C., and Alice Faye Wimmer of Rocky Mount, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 1997, in Sherwood Memorial Park. The Rev. Leonard Southern will officiate. HOLSTEIN, Judge Paul A., 89, of Lexington, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born in Allentown, Pa. October 30, 1907, a son of the late Albert J. Holstein and Lillian E. Wertz Holstein. Judge Holstein was a direct descendant of Julius Holstein, an early pioneer Danish settler. Judge Holstein served as judge of the 25th judicial circuit since March 7, 1964. He announced his retirement December 16, 1977. He continued to serve and heard specific cases by designation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Judge Holstein was the only resident judge to succeed Judge Houston Letcher, who died in 1912. Prior to his election to the circuit judgeship, Judge Holstein served the City of Lexington as Mayor and Judge of the Municipal Court for 13 years. He practiced law continuously from 1932 when he was admitted i n the bar, interrupted only by active military duty in the Navy during World War II. He played football while a student at Washington and Lee. Following his graduation and prior to his enlistment in the United States armed forces, he was head football coach at his alma mater. Judge Holstein was a member of the Lexington Club of Kiwanis International, a past president of the Lexington Club and a past lieutenant governor of the capitol district. He was a past president of the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce, the Rockbridge Chapters of the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. He was a registered scouter for more than 50 years. In 1949, in recognition of his contribution to scouting, he was awarded the Silver Beaver. He was a very active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Lexington. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Louise Holstein McClung, Rockbridge Baths, and Sandra Holstein LaTorre and her husband, Donald LaTorre, Pembleton, S.C.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Elisabeth W. Ooi and Peter Ooi, and Kathryn I. King and Joseph Wayne King, Virginia Beach; one grandson, J. Kendall McClung III, Rockbridge Baths; very special caregivers, Melissa Edwards, Lexington, Marie Ruley, Port Orange, Fla., Rhonda Scott, Glasgow, Karen Ruley, Gail Ferguson, and Sue Hostetter, all of Lexington. Judge Holstein was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 1997, at the Williams Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth K. Patrick and Rev. Albert J. Schrader officiating. Interment will follow in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial donations may be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 129 S. Randolph Street, Lexington, Va. 24450. MARTIN, Patricia B., 73, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 1997. She was a great wife, mother and friend who will be sadly missed by her family. She is survived by her husband, John N. Martin; son and daughter-in-law, John M. and Sharon Martin; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and David Shepherd; sister, Doris Damewood; four grandchildren, Chad Martin, Brad Martin, Stephanie and husband Danny Moran, Stacey and husband Nick Gray. McKINNEY, Charlie Haze, (``Mac""), 81, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 1997. He was an area resident of Salem for many years and was retired from the Virginian and N & W Railroads after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Locust Grove United Methodist Church and Eggleston Masonic Lodge #309. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Kathleen S. McKinney of 33 years and three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Lillian H. McKinney; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy M. and Roy C. Lester, Goodview; one grandson, C. Dameon Lester of Illinois; one graddaughter, Amy Kathleen Lester of Harrisonburg; one stepson and daughter-in-law, L. George and Pat McKinney, Salem; one stepgrandson, Sam McKinney, Salem; one stepgranddaughter, Elizabeth McKinney of Salem; sister, Mabel M. Walker of Narrows. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 25, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem with J. Michael Derflinger officiating. MEADOR, Floyd Allen, 84, of Roanoke, and formerly of Hardy died Thursday, April 24, 1997 in a local nursing ho me. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred S. Meador, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jube Meador, brothers, Henry, Walter and Jim Meador. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Moody of Roanoke; granddaughter, Amanda Delong, sisters, Mrs. Lillian Hale of Hardy, Mrs. Lula Meador of Goodview; and Mrs. Rena Thompson of Roanoke; brothers, Jerry Meador of Moneta; and Calvin Meador of Hardy; sister-in-law, Thelma Meador of Moneta; and a number nieces and nephews. MITCHEM, Drema Morris, 66, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of McCoy, Va., died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mitchem was born March 19, 1931 in Montgomery County to the late Robert Tillman and Flora French Fagg Morris. She had lived in Winston-Salem for the past 18 years. She was a member of Robbins Road Christian Church in Durham, N.C. Mrs. Mitchem was a past Worthy Matron of the Ingles Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star of Durham, N.C., and was the past President of The Durham Chapter of the Secretaries Association. She had worked for the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Duke University, and Wake Forest University. Mrs. Mitchem was preceded in death by a sister, Adele Erickson. Survivors include her husband, Mr. Arnold Mitchem of the home; two brothers, Carlos E. Morris and wife, Ida Mae, of Radford, Va. and Glenn A. Morris and wife, Helen, of Spencer, Va.; one nephew; four nieces; two grand-nieces; and two grand-nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 1997, at Centennial Christian Church Cemetery, McCoy, Va. PATE, Mamie Durham, 92, of Boones Mill, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 23, 1997, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease and cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Pate. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Jean Pate, Lester and Helen Pate, all of Boones Mill; seven grandchildren; three great-grandc hildren; two sisters, Lucy Alice Durham and Roberta Durham, both of Ferrum. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. James H. Steele and the Rev. Bruce Robinson officiating. PAULSEN, Norman John, 78, of 1223 Mulberry Rd., Martinsville, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in Memorial Hospital, Martinsville-Henry County. He was born November 13, 1918 in Hastings, Minn., son of the late Peter Paulsen and Thora Hansen Paulsen. He was retired from the Martinsville-Henry County Health Department. Mr. Paulsen was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1939 and retired in 1971 as a C.W. 04 Navy Officer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Crary Paulsen. Surviving are two daughters, Kris Paulsen Wilson of Roanoke, and Barbara Paulsen Edoff of Virginia Beach; one sister, Edith Myhron of Rochester, Minn.; two brothers, Les Paulsen of Minnetonka, Minn., and George Paulsen of Rochester, Minn.; three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with The Rev. John Ericson officiating. Interment will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. PERDUE, Charles S., 73, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, April 24, 1997. Lotz Vinton Chapel is handling arrangements.

PERDUE, Helen Brookman, 78, of Narrows, died Thursday morning, April 24, 1997, in the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. She was born in Pulaski on May 24, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Stewart Foster and Mollie Tickle Brookman. She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Perdue, and a son, William B. Perdue. She was a member of the Evangelistic Outreach Ministry in Pembroke. She is survived by three sons, C. F. Perdue, Bobby Perdue and Jeff Perdue, all of Narrows; three daughters, Joyce Reed of Statesboro, Ga., and Jody Spangler and Carolyn Perdue, both of Narrows; two sisters, Mabel Akers of Pulaski and Hazel Brookman of California; 18 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Evangelistic Outreach Ministry in Pembroke, with the Rev. Elizabeth Raines officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will gather with their friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows Friday evening from 7 to 9.

QUICK, Richard Rolander, 75, of Roanoke, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, April 23, 1997. Dick devoted his life to helping others and was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed, and is survived by his children, Richard S. Quick, David E. Quick, both of Roanoke, Shar Q. Austin, Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary Q. Mann, Roanoke; former wife, Anita K. Quick, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, W. A. Quick, Jr., Roanoke; two sisters, Mary Q. Deaver, Staunton, Faye Nelson Reeser, Alexandria; 11 grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Harry Y. Gamble Saturday 11 a.m. in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Research Center at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, or Calvary Baptist Church, Roanoke. SANDERSON, Dorothy Smith, 82, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in Stonewall Jacks on Hospital. Born in Rockbridge County on March 3, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Elisha M. and Rosa Drain Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Sanderson Sr.; and two children, Cecil Sanderson and Shirley Sanderson. She is survived by five children, John H. Sanderson Jr., Betty S. Camper, Doris M. Sanderson, and Faye S. Slough, all of Buena Vista, and Wanda S. Agnor, Lexington; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Genevieve Burch, Amherst; three brothers, Elisha ``Smitty'' Smith, Baltimore, Md., Ottie Smith and Clinton Smith, both of Glasgow; sister-in-law, Nellie S. Sorrells, Buena Vista; special friends, Madeline Austin and Deana Garrett, both of Buena Vista. SMITH, Mary Ellen Williams, 81, of St. Louis, Mo., and formerly of 904 N. Jefferson Ave., Pulaski, Va., died Thursday morning, April 24, 1997, in the Brooking Park Nursing Home, St. Louis, Mo. Born March 7, 1916 in Giles County, she was the daughter of the late Leta Durham Williams and Alfred H. Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Conway Howard Smith. Mrs. Smith was a former member of the Child Study Club, the Thursday Club, the Round Dozen Club, and the D.A.R., a member of the St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association, and a member of the Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Mo. She was a talented musician who played the organ and sang in the community. She used her musical talents in Sunday School classes and any place that they were needed. She was instrumental in the early years of the development of the Mary Montgomery Nursing Home, and in helping obtain a TV, Christmas presents and regular visitations. She was secretary to J. Frank Wysor, County Treasurer, for seven years. She was also a Girl Scout leader. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Michael ``Rosemary'' Wick of St. Louis, Mo. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va., with Rev. Steven R. Emory officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. SORRELL, Stuart Wesly Jr., (``Toby''), 78, of Buchanan, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997. Mr. Sorrell had served as a Staff Sergeant in the 70th Service Squadron in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He had retired from Associated Transport, Jones Trucking and Blue Ridge Transfer after 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #93 of Buchanan. Toby was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart W. Sorrell Sr. and Buna Painter Sorrell; sister, Shirley Sorrell Reid; and brother, Windom Silas Sorrell. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Vassar Sorrell; son and daughter-in-law, Toby Wayne and Debby W. Sorrell, Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Sorrell and Troy D. Mullis, Mooresville, N.C., Dorothy Sorrell and Thomas N. WATKINS, Angela Brooks, 19, daughter of Col. Charles A. and Dolores Watkins of Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., died Monday, April 21, 1997, after a nine year battle with cancer. Angela was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Waldorf, Md. and a freshman at the University of South Carolina, Sumter. She is survived by her parents; a brother, Eric Watkins, Fredericksburg; grandparents, Mrs. Mae Ant el, Salem and the Rev. and Mrs. Charles A. Watkins, Roanoke. A memorial service was held at Trinity Baptist Church, Walforf, Md. April 24. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Saturday, April 26 at1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, Make a Wish Foundation or Trinity Baptist Church, Waldorf, Md.
