NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

Tiffany Taylor, daughter of Donnie and Linda Grubb of Christiansburg, received a trophy and a $200 partial scholarship toward a modeling course at the Miss Virginia National Teenager Pageant held in Virginia Beach April 4 and 5. She competed in the talent and evening gown events.

The Montgomery County 4-H Clubs' annual County Contest was held April 5 at Christiansburg Middle School. Winners in the junior division, ages 9-11, were: Danette Travis, vet science; Julisia Banach, horses;Meredith Miller, citizenship and dramatic reading;Alex Mandzak, citizenship and dramatic reading; Dwayne Link, collections; Anna Lauth, crafts;Alison Smith, dramatic reading; Nikki Mitchem, marine and aquatic science; Matthew Miller, environmental and natural resources; Ann Thorson, marine and aquatic science; Matthew Trumbo-Tual, aerospace; Roddy DeHart, experimentation; and Aaron White, Annalyn Gilley, Autumn Martin, and Kelly Self, in fruits and vegetables. Katie Spillane was the winner in the intermediate division, ages 12-13. This group of winners will represent the county at the 4-H Area Contest May 24 at New River Community College.

Winners in the senior division, ages 14-18, who will be representatives at State 4-H Congress, June 17-20 at Virginia Tech, were: Carrie Mason, citizenship; Jennifer Link, crafts; and Amanda Huff, public speaking.

Silver Clovers 4-H Club, Belview Elementary School, won the $100 award for highest percentage of members participating in the County Contest.

Carol Bitner, newly named executive director, was introduced at the annual meeting of the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council in Salem on April 12. Kevan Danker of Christiansburg, a paratransit coordinator with Blacksburg Transit, was re-elected as a member-at-large on the Board of Directors for the 1997-1999 term. Local Senior Girl Scouts elected to serve a one-year term on the Board of Directors are April Miller, Check, and Lori Whittimore, Christiansburg.

Angie Miller of Check was a recipient of an Honor Pin, and Barbara VanDyke of Radford received the Virginia Skyline Appreciation Award. April Nichols, Copper Hill, received a Gold Award for 1996. Recipients of the Gold Award for 1997 include Erica Bates, Anne Brinckman, Kelly Fagan, Andrea Feret, Megan McNinney, Megan Notter, Hilary Simmons, Robin Trear and Leigh Waldron, all of Blacksburg, and Tracy Snider of Dublin.

New officers of the Virginia Tech Faculty Women's Club elected for 1997-98 at the April 14 meeting are: Shirley Roberts, president; Delores Hendricks, vice president; Carolyn Eller, corresponding secretary; Diana Pickering, recording secretary; Barbara Wierwille, treasurer; and Carol Jubb, historian. Directors at Large are Pat McGuire, Liz Goodsell, Margaret Leonard and Rosalyn Lester.

Janis Burke of Pulaski has been appointed case manager for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New River Valley, Inc. A graduate of Radford University, she will be assisting present and future matches for the organization.

Kathleen T. Harshberger will direct the historical outdoor drama, "The Long Way Home," in Radford this season. An experienced actress, Harshberger has played the lead role of the frontier heroine in six seasons of its production. She is also the executive director of the University Club at Virginia Tech.

Jennifer L. Ulsh, daughter of C. Gene and Patricia Haugh of Blacksburg, has joined the staff of BWBR Architects as an interior designer. The design firm serves clients in the United States and Asia.

Roger Saville and Chuck Shorter of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau were part of a group of 138 county Farm Bureau leaders from across the state who visited with representatives and senators in Washington, D.C., in March.
