ROANOKE BOY HIT BY TRUCK NEAR HIS SCHOOL

A Roanoke boy suffered a head injury Friday afternoon after he was hit by a pickup truck near Lincoln Terrace Elementary School. The injury was not life-threatening.

Marcus T. Banks, 6, of Dupree Street Northwest ran across Burrell Street Northwest about 4 p.m. and was struck by a pickup driven by Michael Todd Fisher, 28, of Northwest Roanoke, Roanoke police said.

Witnesses told police a group of children ran across the street, in the 1800 block of Burrell, and then Banks "darted" into the street, possibly following the group, and was hit as the truck traveled south toward Orange Avenue near Washington Park. Banks had to be pulled from beneath the truck, according to a witness, police said.

Police said there was no indication that Fisher was speeding or under the influence of alcohol. No charges were placed Friday.

Banks was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. A hospital spokesperson said he was not registered as a patient at the hospital late Friday night.
