ATEYEH, Philip Gilbert, 48, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 1997. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 1997, at Oakey's North Chapel, where the family will be receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m.

AUSBURNE, Emma Katherine, infant daughter of Michael Ausburne and Cynthia Garlick of Martinsville, died Friday, April 25, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Gilbert Ausburne. Surviving are her paternal grandmother, Brenda Ausburne of Martinsville; her paternal great-grandmother, Helen Slayton of Martinsville; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Garlick of Henry, and one aunt, Amy Garlick-Tchourachev. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Henry, with the Rev. Steve Tilley officiating. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount.

BALLANTINE , Nellie Anne Miles, 90, of Roanoke, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in a local nursing home. Mrs. Ballantine was predeceased by her husband, Samuel A. Ballantine, and a grandson, Mark Steven Crawford. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and retired as office manager with Orkin Exterminating Company. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Bill Campbell of Moneta, and Betty and Ron Crawford of Roanoke; grandchildren, W. David Campbell, Cathy C. and Jim Crawford, and Mark J. and Dawn Campbell, all of Roanoke, Cindy C. and Tom Troy of South Yarmouth, Mass., and Kenneth N. Crawford of Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Mark A., Erica F. and Amelia L. Campbell, and Shawn P. Troy, and several nieces and nephews. BELL, James Ray, 72, of Salem, passed away Thursday, April 24, 1997. He was a retired driver for the Kroger Company. He is survived by his wife, Bessie A. Bell; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn B. and Henry E. Stinnette, Vinton; son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Kathy Bell, Salem; sister and brother-in-law, Laverne B. and Ward Lester, Roanoke; also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. BLOUNT, Juanita Jones, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, April 25, 1997. She was the widow of Frank G. Blount, a member of Belmont Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, and was a retired registered nurse from Jefferson Hospital and Community Hospital. Mrs. Blount was a native of Lexington and was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Jones, Nellie Jones and Catherine Hileman. Surviving are a nephew, Charles and wife, Darlene Hileman, Lexington; a great-niece, great-nephew, and numerous brothers-in-law and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday from Belmont Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Elliott Hipp officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. BOWMAN, Elaine Irene, 48, of Wirtz, died Friday morning, April 25, 1997. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Bowman, and stepmother, Esther Cottrell Bowman. Surviving are her father, Herman E. Bowman of Arcanum, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Doris Bowman of Wirtz; one sister, Eloise Bowman of Wirtz; a foster sister, Fay Wolfe of Quinter, Kan.; a stepbrother, Kenny Cottrell of Indiana; a stepsister, Vera Miller of Ohio; one niece, Rita Popejoy and husband, John of Wirtz; two nephews, Roland Bowman and wife, Erlene of Boones Mill and Aaron Bowman of Modesto, Calif., and six great-nieces and great-nephews. FRITZ, Kellie Cary, 89, of Route 2, (Highland Road), Dublin, and formerly of Coeburn, passed away Friday, April 25, 1997, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Jerry Evans, Route 2, (Highland Road) Dublin, where she made her home. Born June 25, 1907 in Inman, she was the daughter of the late Abby Hale Cary Sr. and Sena Kesterson Cary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Fritz; and two daughters, Lena Fritz and Jo Ann Coles; three sisters, Gladys McIver, Hilda Clark, and Sue McHenry; and four brothers, E. E. Cary, Vernon Cary, Robert Cary, and Maurice Cary. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church, Coeburn, and transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church, Radford. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Nell Collier, Ohio, Zola Ruth Tiller and Harry Tiller, Winston-Salem, N.C., Jean Evans and Jerry Evans, Dublin; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ruth Cary, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; two brothers, Lyle Cary, Maryville, Tenn., A. GLASS, Alma Barrentine, 84, of Bedford, died Friday, April 25, 1997 in the Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Latta, S.C., a daughter of the late Joseph H. Barrentine and Mattie Carte r Barrentine. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel C. Glass, Sr. She was a member of Farmville Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Samuel C. Glass, Jr., Richmond, James F. Glass, Greensboro, N. C., Charles Franklin Glass, Malibu, Calif.; two daughters, Katherine Glass Draucker, Alexandria, Margaret Glass Whitlock, Smith Mountain Lake; three brothers, Herbert Barrentine, Columbus, Ga., Luther M. Barrentine, Florence, S. C., Ralph Barrentine, Niceville, Fla.; one sister, Vivian Barrentine Jackson, Lynchburg; 16 grandchildren. HARPER, James W., 56, of Boones Mill, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Harper; and one sister, Alberta Miller. His survivors include one daughter, Delores Harper of Roanoke; three sons, Ricky Harper (Lindora) of Bedford, Irvin and James Harper of Roanoke; one brother, Charles Harper, Roanoke; six sisters, Melva Poindexter and Madeline Harper, both of New Orleans, La., Beulah Harper, Eula Taylor and Margaret Swaine, all of Boones Mill, and Lilly Pearl Harper of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Latia Guerrant, Aleshia Parker, Melvin, Lethaniel, and Timothy Harper. Funeral services will be Monday, 11 a.m., at the Second Mount Airy Baptist Church with Dr. Shadrack Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. HEDGBETH, Roger A. Sr., of Sal em, who organized the Roanoke Valley Veterans Council, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, the day following his 77th birthday. He served both as President and for many years as Secretary of this vital community group. Hedgbeth also served on the Planning Committee for the establishment of Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley and held life memberships in the following Veterans organizations: Darden C. Harmon VFW Post #4318 and American Legion Post #202 (now with Post #19), both of Salem, H. H. McKenzie DAV Post #3 and Voiture 1104 of La Societe of the 40 & 8, both of Roanoke. Roger was the son of William Luther Hedgbeth and Mattie Hubbard Hedgbeth, born and raised in Norfolk. He graduated from Maury High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Upper Iowa University. He studied law at T. C. Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond, and practiced law with Attorney Harlin Perrine in Salem before reentering government service. He retired in 1979 from the Veterans Administration Regional Office in Roanoke with 30 years of service. He was a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 111 in Roanoke, and the National Association of Blinded Veterans, with headquarters in Arlington. In World War II, Hedgbeth was a Sergeant in the 30th Division, Company K, of the 117th U.S. Army; in recent years, he joined the Tar Heel Association related to this unit. During the Battle of the Bulge, Roger received the Bronze Star Medal for bravery and five other ribbons of commendation. He was a sniper, a war hero who had many stories to tell about combat, including those about his meeting Sir Winston Churchill and General George C. Patton, but Hedgbeth was even prouder to be named Mayor of the German city for a day that he had just helped capture. Roger is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linnae Redd Hedgbeth, and three children, Harriet Bridget Hedgbeth Leavens, Attorney at Law, in private practice near her home in Long Beach, Calif., and her husband, John Leavens Jr.; Llewellyn Hubbard Hedgbeth Reed, Attorney at Law, with the Department of State Foreign Service, presently located at the Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, Outer Mongolia, and her husband, Satch Reed, who is with her on post (Lulu was the apple of her Daddy's eye!), and Robert Albert Hedgbeth Jr. of Salem. Hedgbeth was a member of Taylor Masonic Lodge No. 23, A.F.&A.M.; D. C. Shanks Royal Arch Chapter #31, and Past Patron of Salem Chapter #161, Order of the Eastern Star, all in Salem. He was a 32 Mason in the Scottish Rite, belonged to Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., York Rite Bayard Commandery #15 of Knights Templar, and Roanoke Valley Court #13, Order of the Amaranth, all in Roanoke. In 1985, ``Hodge"" donated his body to science and his eyes to the Lions Club Eye Bank. Two years later, he suddenly became blind himself and has spent the last two years in a Salem nursing center. If donations are to be made in his memory, the family suggests that they be made to his favorite charity, Knights Templar Eye Foundation, c/o Bayard Commandery #15, 109 Kirk Avenue, S.W., Roanoke, Va. 24011. A short memorial service will be held at the Jane Morgan Harris Chapel of Richfield Nursing Center at the 11 a.m. Service on Sunday, April 27, with the Chaplain Rev. Tom Clay officiating. At a later date, Roger's ashes will be placed in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery. A long-standing request of ``Hodge's"" to have a party for all his friends and Veteran buddies will be held in the fall to celebrate his life.

HEVENER, Roxie Mace, 68, of 1206 Hankey Mtn. Hwy., Churchville, died Friday, April 25, 1997, at her home. Surviving are her husband, R. Clinton Hevener; two children, Donna McCoy of Staunton and Reginald Hevener of Mt. Sidney; four sisters, Ellen Anderson of Fishersville, Ruby Martin of Grottoes, Mary Edwards and Vertia Sherburne, both of Lexington; two brothers, John of Buena Vista and Elbert of Grottoes; and four grandchildren. A service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Staunton Seventh Day Adventist Church, with burial in Green H ill Cemetery, Churchville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bear Funeral Home, Churchville.

KLOOCK, Dr. Lois Gail Everett, 63, of 604 Glenwood Terrace, Stuart, died Thursday night at the RJR-Patrick Memorial Hospital in Stuart. A native of Port Clinton, Ohio, she was born November 8, 1933, daughter of the late Morton and Josephine Cover Everett. The Director of Instruction for the Patrick County School System, she taught in Ohio, Texas, Michigan, Utah, and at the Roanoke Catholic School before coming to the Woolwine Elementary School as a 2nd grade teacher in 1976. Dr. Kloock was Title One Supervisor from 1977-78 and Elementary School Supervisor from 1978-84. In 1987 she became General Supervisor of the school system. Receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and a Master's Degree from University of Virginia, she earned her doctorate from VA Tech in 1990. The became Director of Instruction in 1990 and retired from the position in November of 1996, due to illness. She is survived by her husband, Arnie Kloock of the home; a son, Kent Kloock of Roanoke; a brother, Ronald Everett of Florida; a sister, Janet Coalston of Port Clinton, Ohio. There will be a family visitation Sunday evening from 6 until 7:30 followed by a memorial service at Howell Funeral Home, Hwy. 58 East, Stuart, Virginia. Funeral services will be held Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Roanoke, of which she was a long time member. Burial will be in Port Clinton, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hour Ministries, 2185 Hampton Ave., St. Louis, Mo. 63139-9982. Arrangements are by Howell Funeral Home, Stuart.

LEE, T. G., 73, of Pinola, Miss., died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, of heart failure at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Miss. A Mississippi native, Mr. Lee was a member of Shivers Baptist Church, where he served as Adult Sunday School teacher and deacon for more than 35 years. He also was an active lay speaker in his home state and in the Roanoke area when visiting his children and grandchildren. A graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mr. Lee taught school in the Magee, Miss. system two years before becoming a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, a position from which he retired in 1980. He was then appointed Field Operations Director of the Miss. Emergency Management Agency by Gov. William Winter, and left that agency to assume the duties of Simpson County, Miss. Justice Court Judge. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his oldest grandchild, Carla McCulloch, in 1991. His survivors include his wife, Edwina; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Larry McCulloch of Vinton, Robin and Hamp Gaston of Mendenhall, Miss., Lori and Robert P. Smith of Lester, Ala.; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Treva Lee of Corinth, Miss.; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Cody of Monticello, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, April 18, at Shivers Baptist Church, Pinola, Miss., with burial following in the Owens Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Larry Lee, Carey Lee, Randy Cody, Billy Rawls, David Weems, and John Allen Flynt. Honorary pallbearers included Malcolm Anderson, O. D. McAlpin, Harris Sullivan, Gov. LOVELL, Ruby Weddle, 84, of Pilot, passed away Thursday, April 24, 1997, at her home. OTEY, Howard C., 86, of Troutville, passed away Thursday, April 24, 1997, at his home. A veteran of World War II, he served in the China, Burma, and India theatres in the US Army Air Corps. He was a Peoples Life Insurance Company agent in Botetourt Co. and a retired Raleigh Home Products representative for many years. Mr. Otey was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann Blankenship Otey. Surviving are a stepson, John Mize, Virginia Beach; a very special granddaughter, Cynthia M. Beheler and her husband, Dennis C. Beheler, of Danville; two nephews, Ray Otey and his wife, Doris Otey, Roanoke, Cline W. Otey, West Linn, Ore.; six additional grandchildren, Chris Mize, Harold and Linda Mills, Ronnie Mills, Wayne Mills, Katherine Thorne; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. PALMER, Albert Sidney, 72, of Christiansburg, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 25, 1997, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Linda Bell Palmer; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky B. and Joann Weddle Palmer; daughters and sons-in-law , Jill P. and Max A. White, Sheila P. and Alan Miles, Penny E. Palmer; granddaughters, Christine, Reagan, and Monica, all of Christiansburg; one sister, Zora P. Miles, Riner. PERDUE, Charles S., 73, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, April 24, 1997, at his residence. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from Chesapeake Paper Corp. after 35 years service. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Roberts Perdue; four sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Wayne and Linda Perdue , Roanoke, Dennis C. and Carol Perdue, Botetourt County, Fred L. and Louise Perdue, Michael Todd and Beth Perdue, all of Roanoke; two daughters and son-in-law, Dorothy Rose Obenchain, Roanoke, Joyce P. and Reginald Wallace, Roanoke; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. STAPLES, Minnie Roberta Lee, (""Betty"") 70, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997. Betty was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Boyd Lee. She was a graduate of Roanoke College. She taught for many years in the American Schools Overseas, Guam, Okinawa and Paris France. She was the widow of Bill Staples and is survived by her sister, Mary Frances L ee, Roanoke. Her family also includes, cousins, stepchildren and many friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 1997 at Woodlawn United Methodist Church with Rev. Arthur Grant officiating. Private interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. TICKLE, Ethel Mabry, 89, of Dublin, die d Thursday, April 24, 1997, at her home. She was born in Pulaski County on June 6, 1907, and was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Mabry and Artie Worrell Mabry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Luther Haven Tickle; by a son; a grandson; a granddaughter; three brothers; and five sisters. She was a member of the Dublin Methodist Church. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth H. and Barbara Tickle, Dublin, Richard Daniel Tickle, Wytheville, Douglas Wayne and Rose Marie Tickle, Dublin; daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline T. and Hensel McNew, Dublin, Lois T. and Douglas Malone, Wrightsville Beach, N.C., Mary Lou and R. Tommy Lorton, Dublin; one sister, Della M. Tolbert, Bluefield, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Joe McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. WATKINS, Edith Rhodes, (``Ebie''), of 33 Cleveland Ave., Martinsville, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in Martinsville Memorial Hospital. She was born September 16, 1912 in Gala, in Botetourt County, daughter of the late Cluer Snead Rhodes and Fesona Nekah Rhodes. She was a retired librarian for the Martinsville City Schools, and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil William ``Cherry'' Watkins. Surviving are one son, C. Jere Watkins of Richmond; one grandson, Jeffrey M. Watkins of Collinsville; two granddaughters, Mrs. Jaye W. Schissel of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Kelly W. Massoud of Durham, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Nadia Massoud of Durham, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 1997, at Christ Episcopal Church with Rev. Edward Covert officiating. The family will receive friends in the Parish House immediately after the services. A graveside service will be held Monday, 10 a.m., at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. WEAVER, Gene Wilson, 58, of Hardy, died Friday, April 25, 1997. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

WIDENER, Harlow James Sr., (``Red''), 62, of Marion, passed away Friday morning, April 25, 1997, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Widener was a native of Smyth County and a lifelong resident of Marion. He was an employee of both the Brunswick Corporation and Seaver-Brown Funeral Home, and was a longtime member of the Marion Life Saving Crew. He also served as Magistrate in Smyth County for a number of years. He was a member of the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Widener, Marion; one daughter, Debbie Carol Anders, Marion; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Harlow James Jr. (Jimmy) and Linda Widener, Marion, Willis and Beverly Widener, Marion, Courtney Widener of the home, David Widener of the home; two sisters, Reatha Harris, Marion, Frieda Osborne, Marion; five brothers, Herb Widener, Marion, J. D. Widener, Abingdon, Ronnie Widener, Seven Mile Ford, Gerald Widener, Seven Mile Ford, Reed Widener, Seven Mile Ford; six grandchildren, Amy Anders, Jennifer Anders, Eric Widener, Jill Widener, Jonathon Widener, and Joshua Widener; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Tyler Widener. Funeral services for ``Red'' Widener will be conducted on Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m. from the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Bradley, Kenny Lewis, Doug Henderlite, Charlie Overbay, Richard Henderson, and Fred Catron. Honorary pallbearers will be all active and retired police officers from the Smyth County and Marion areas. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted, however, donations may be made to the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, Route 1, Box 1352, Atkins, Va. 24311.
