In tennis action:
South Lakes 6 Maury 3
Northern Region runner-up South Lakes used its superior depth to wear down the two-time defending Eastern Region champion Commodores at Maury in a Group AAA state boys tennis match.
The strength of Maury's Nos. 4-6 players has been one of the key reasons why the Commodores (14-2) have been a cut above the rest of the region the past two years. Tuesday, however, the depth advantage rested squarely with South Lakes, a team with little discernable difference between its top player and the last man on the roster.
``If I play our No. 1, it's almost always a tight match,'' said Seahawk No. 5 Adam Jeffrey. ``I mean, he might have a great day and beat me 10-2, but I might have a great day and beat him 10-8.''
Jeffrey, No. 4 Justin Britt and No. 6 Andrew Hunter needed just over an hour to post straight-sets victories, putting the pressure on the top half of Maury's lineup.
Maury No. 1 Stuart Evans came through with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jamey Elliott. But No. 2 Tyler Keister dropped a tight two-setter to Alan Morris, and South Lakes' Kevin McGee clinched the match with a 7-6, 7-5 victory over David West at No. 3.
The Commodores took two of the three doubles matches, which were shortened to eight-game pro-sets.
