Magann won the award over five other competitors nationwide based on the company's work on the $134 million flood wall in Richmond, the largest and most complex project in Magann's history.
{REST} Developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the project provides flood protection for commercial and industrial downtown areas along the James River.
Not only did Magann perform all work according to plans for the $29.2 million northside interior drainage portion of the flood wall, Magann's staff also submitted engineering proposals that improved construction and saved time and construction costs.
The W.F. Magann Corp., with headquarters in West Norfolk, began in 1945 as a concrete contractor. Today, they provide general contracting for heavy, marine and industrial construction.
In addition to the corps award, Magann also captured Contractor-of-the-Year for the Virginia/District of Columbia/Maryland Chapter of the American Public Works Association and has been nominated for the nationwide American Public Works Association Contractor-of-the-Year Award.
The structure built by Magann also earned honorable mention in the American Consulting Engineers Council 1994 Engineering Excellence Award competition. Earlier this year, the Corps of Engineers' Norfolk District office recognized Magann's performance on the Richmond flood wall with the Commander's Award for Public Service.
This is the third year for the corps' Contractor-of-the-Year award, which was created to reward those contractors who demonstrate excellence in the performance of their work, thereby making significant contributions to the national interest.
