Mr. Dettmer, a native of Portsmouth, was a civil service employee at the Public Works Center, Norfolk Naval Base. He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Norfolk. He was a 1977 graduate of John Yeates High School in Suffolk and attended Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University. He was an avid surfer.
{REST} Survivors include his wife, Teresa Lee Hester-Dettmer; three daughters, Leslie Dettmer and Jessica Dettmer, both of Chesapeake, and Erica Lee Dettmer of Norfolk; his mother, Mary Frances Herron McMaster of Bedford, Va.; his father, Samuel H. Dettmer of Suffolk; three sisters, Brenda Faulkiner of Keswick, Ontario, Canada, Theresa Dettmer of Suffolk and Kelly Jean McMaster of Roanoke, Va.; four brothers, Thomas Dettmer of Gloucester, Va., Herbert Dettmer of Suffolk, Shawn McMaster and Jason McMaster, both of Bedford.
A church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Lutheran Church of Norfolk by Dr. James G. Cobb. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church of Norfolk or Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling arrangements.
