Mr. Bowers was born in Prosperity, S.C., and retired in 1966 from the U.S. Navy. He began his maritime career at Portsmouth Marine Terminal in 1967. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Suffolk, Western Branch Masonic Lodge (NU)189, Khedive Shrine Temple and Portsmouth Scottish Rite.
{REST} He is survived by his wife, Florence M. Bowers; two brothers, Gene Bowers of Columbia, S.C., and Curtis Bowers of Chapin, S.C.; two sisters, Margaret Morris of Orangeburg, S.C., and Florence Morris of Newberry, S.C.; one stepson, H. James Harris of Dallas; one daughter, Jancie McCarty of Spokane, Wash.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, by the Rev. Dick Browder. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, with Masonic rites. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
