SUSPECT SAYS HE CANNOT RECALL BEING IN VIRGINIA

{LEAD} A 35-year-old Virginia man wanted on grand larceny charges in Portsmouth stuck with his amnesia story Thursday, telling a judge he could not remember anything that happened to him before May 22.

``I have no knowledge of any of these charges,'' Michael Ray Haddock told District Judge C. Christopher Bean. ``I have no knowledge of even being in Virginia.''

{REST} Haddock, who has a Smithfield address and has lived in Portsmouth, was arrested at Albemarle Hospital on Wednesday on a warrant from Portsmouth.

Bean read the warrant to Haddock after Haddock said he did not understand the charge. The judge ordered that a court-appointed attorney be assigned to represent him in his next court appearance, scheduled for June 30.

Haddock approached a Kill Devil Hills fire station on May 22 and told officials he could not remember who or where he was.

Family members and former co-workers identified Haddock after news reports about him aired last Friday.

Haddock had been in the hospital until he was arrested Wednesday. Court officials said he was being held in jail on $1,000 bond.
