EVMS HONORS 6 FACULTY MEMBERS WITH TOP AWARDS

{LEAD} The Eastern Virginia Medical School honored six faculty members Thursday during the annual Dean's Faculty Achievement Awards.

The honors are the school's highest and recognize contributions to teaching and research made by full- and part-time faculty members. Candidates were nominated by fellow faculty members, and the recipients were selected by an awards committee, also made up of faculty members.

{REST} The top honor, the Dean's Outstanding Faculty Award, went to Dr. Gary L. Schechter, professor and chairman of the department of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery.

Schechter was recognized for his overall leadership, accomplishments in teaching, research and institutional service. He is one of the school's original faculty members and has been a guiding force in the school's development.

The other winners were:

Dr. George W. Kochl, an associate professor of clinical pediatrics, for Achievement by Community Faculty.

Dr. David B. Propert, a professor of internal medicine, for Achievement in Institutional Service.

Kenneth D. Somers, a professor of microbiology and immunology and a research professor in head and neck surgery, for Achievement in Teaching in the Basic Sciences.

Richard M. Stenberg, a associate professor of microbiology and immunology, for Achievement in Research.

J. Catesby Ware, a professor and director of the Sleep Disorders Center, for Achievement in Clinical Science.
