DRIVER ACCUSED OF TRYING TO RUN 2 SUFFOLK POLICE OFFICERS OFF ROAD

{LEAD} Sussex County deputies have arrested a man wanted for crashing into a Suffolk patrol car during a chase Tuesday night.

Louis Andre Holmes, 35, of Waverly was arrested late Wednesday and charged with two counts of attempted capital murder for allegedly trying to kill two police officers by running them off the road.

{REST} Police said Holmes led them on a chase on U.S. Route 58 from Franklin to Suffolk. He allegedly rammed into a Suffolk police car and tried to force a state police cruiser off the road before crashing into a guardrail on the Nansemond River Bridge near Wilroy Road.

Police said Holmes was driving his girlfriend's car and did not have a driver's license. He fled into the woods but a Franklin police officer who knew Holmes and participated in the chase identified him to Suffolk police.

Holmes could face life terms for each attempted murder charge if convicted. He also has been charged with driving as a habitual traffic offender and with using his girlfriend's car without permission.

Police said they plan to take him to Western Tidewater Regional Jail this morning.
