NAVAL STATION WORKER DIES

{LEAD} A man hospitalized Wednesday after an electrical system exploded at Norfolk Naval Station died Thursday of severe burns.

Nelson E. Dettmer, 34, suffered burns on more than 95 percent of his body. He died at 6:40 a.m. at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital's burn/trauma unit.

{REST} Dettmer, who was employed by the Navy Public Works Center, is survived by his wife and three children.

Two other men who were working with Dettmer remain hospitalized in serious condition.

The explosion occurred as the men were working on a 480-volt electrical system beneath the naval station's Pier 23, a submarine pier.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
