2 DIE AFTER RESCUE

{LEAD} A man who fell from a fishing boat and another man who tried to save him died Thursday after being rescued and taken to a hospital, police said.

They were identified as Constantine J. Miante, 64, of Newport News and Harold Michael Gibson, 41, of York County.

{REST} The men were fishing about 9:45 a.m. one-half mile east of the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel when one man fell from the boat.

It is unclear which man fell out of the boat or how but a witness told police the two men headed out of Peterson's Yacht Basin and took a sharp right around rocks. The witness said the man sitting on the bow of the boat fell overboard as they headed into the turn.

The other man threw two life preservers but the man in the water was unable to reach either. The man in the boat then jumped into the water to save his friend.

Both men were rescued by the Virginia Marine Patrol and revived by rescue workers. They were transported to Sentara Hampton General Hospital where both died a short time later.
