GREENBRIER PLACES 4 PLAYERS ON ALL-STATE TEAM

{LEAD} Greenbrier Christian Academy dominated voting for the Division I all-state private school baseball team.

The Gators, who won their third consecutive state championship last week and finished 26-3, put four players on the 15-member first team, led by player of the year Mike Hoskins.

{REST} Hoskins, a catcher, batted .516 and had 17 extra base hits. He scored 47 runs, batted in 26 and stole 29 bases.

Hoskins is considering Virginia Commonwealth, Campbell and North Carolina-Greensboro.

Joining him on the team are pitcher Ed Gosman and Matt Harden and infielder Daryn Bettis. First baseman Brian Turner received honorable mention.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy put three players on the Division II all-state team: Outfielders Derek Riebel and Mark Fowler and second baseman Grant Sharp. Pitcher Walt Bondurant received honorable mention.

ANDERSON VS. OCHSENFELD: Western Branch's Jimmy Anderson and Bethel's Chris Ochsenfeld are considered the best high school pitchers in the state and Green Run faced both in the Eastern Region tournament.

The Stallions touched Ochsenfeld for seven hits, including a home run by Gene Mugler, in a 7-5 win. But Anderson shut them out on one hit, a single by John Defere, in the Bruins' 12-0 romp.

``Anderson mixed his pitches better,'' Defere said. ``He also threw a little bit harder and had a lot more movement.''

RECRUITING UPDATE: Princess Anne third baseman Derek Lindsay has signed a letter-of-intent with East Carolina, Cavaliers coach Leon Proffitt said. Lindsay batted .417 with 16 RBIs this spring . . . Maury shortstop Chris Libbey is leaning toward Virginia Commonwealth, the best program that has offered him some financial aid. Libbey batted .471, scored 28 runs and batted in 23. He's also been accepted at Virginia Tech and Mary Washington. by CNB
