ONE BIG SHINDIG\

{LEAD} They came. They saw. They conquered.

Tourists, that is. Locals, too.

{REST} What they saw and conquered was a feast of fun and food.

Memorial Day weekend kicked off the city's official tourist season, and this year proved to be as fruitful (especially in Pungo) and favorable (thanks to sunny skies) as any the city's ever seen.

Five fireworks companies competed in the second annual North American Fireworks Competition, and Atlas Advanced Pyrotechnics walked away with a cool 20 grand for first prize. They also got an invitation to return to Virginia Beach July 4 and Labor Day to fire things up again.

Meanwhile, 18 of the state's top wineries offered beach-goers a taste of their finest recipes along the Boardwalk, which was being chalked by competing artists.

And, in Pungo, an estimated crowd of 183,000 showed up Saturday and Sunday to sample something with a decidedly country flavor. The 11th annual Pungo Strawberry Festival proved to be the biggest block party ever at the rural crossroads.

Monday was reserved for more solemn affairs. Families and friends gathered at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial to remember those who've served.

But you know what pictures are worth, so see for yourself.
