NAVY CONTRACT OFFICES TO CUT 98 SHIP JOBS

{LEAD} The Navy offices that handle contracts for shipbuilding, conversion and repair in Portsmouth and Newport News will eliminate 98 jobs over the next several months, according to a Navy memorandum.

The memo, dated May 27, says the SUPSHIP Newport News office will abolish 49 positions - through layoffs and ``early-out'' programs - by Sept. 30. The office currently employs 403 people.

{REST} The SUPSHIP Portsmouth office also will shed 49 positions, by Nov. 18, according to the memo.

SUPSHIP offices in Jacksonville, Fla.; Charleston, S.C.; and New Orleans are to eliminate a total of 90 jobs by Sept. 30, the memo says. by CNB
