FIRST COLONIAL GIRLS FALL TO WOODBRIDGE IN OVERTIME, 1-0

{LEAD} First Colonial was foiled again Friday in the state girls soccer semifinals.

Woodbridge (20-1) executed a perfectly placed corner shot early in the second overtime period to defeat the Patriots, 1-0, at C.D. Hylton High.

{REST} The loss marked the fifth time since 1988 and the third year in a row that First Colonial had fallen short in a bid for its first state title.

``We just didn't put the ball in the net,'' lamented midfielder Jill Davis, one of nine seniors on the team. ``It's just tough.''

First Colonial (13-6-1) previously lost in the semifinals in 1988, the finals in 1990 and 1993 and the quarterfinals in 1992.

``You get this far, you always hate to lose,'' First Colonial coach Janet Rowlands said.

Neither First Colonial nor Woodbridge was ever in much danger of losing - or winning - until the last play.

Woodbridge's Angela Santiago, a sophomore forward, flicked a corner kick just over the outstretched fingers of keeper Stephanie Reavis and deep in the goal box.

Carrie Blackburn, a senior midfielder, stepped into the open area and redirected the ball off her knee for the goal 16:23 into overtime.

``I was just standing by the far post, waiting for it to come,'' Blackburn said. ``It wasn't a set play.''

``I went up for it,'' Reavis added. ``I turned around and it was in the net.''
