The group began the awards more than 12 years ago as a luncheon organized by its executive director and founder Barbara Lewis, with 400 people attending.
{REST} Since then, 2,000 people have attended the show, which Lewis says was organized to ``get women some recognition.
Dr. Georgeanna Jones, co-director of the Jones In-vitro Fertilization Clinic, was its first woman of the year.
Robin D. Ray, president of Old Dominion Tobacco Co. and president and chairman of the Board of Trustees, Medical College of Hampton Roads Foundation, received the 1994 Pioneer Award.
Jane Patton Browning was named the Volunteer of the Year. She is the chairwoman of the Norfolk Commission of Arts and Human Resources Virginia Opera Board and vice president of Musica.
Winners of the 10 Outstanding Women of the Year Awards went to Darlene L. Burcham, assistant city manager of Norfolk; Sharon Ryals-Taylor, vice president of retail leasing, Goodman Segar Hogan Hoffler; Barbara L. Hamm, news director at WTKR-TV; Jeanne Atkinson, owner-director, Stratford Preschool; Joanne M. Barden, vice president of Sentara Leigh Hospital; Helena Lynch Dodson, manager of Eastern Virginia Resident Service Center 2, Bell Atlantic; Susan R. Taylor, CPIW, CIC vice president & partner of Insurance Dynamics Agency Inc.; Susan Johnson Towler, vice president, Crestar Bank; Judith A. Scharle, teacher/author, Maury High School; and Gi An Peterson Hatfield, owner of Atlas Travel Service.
