BOYS U-15 BLAST SELECT TEAM TAKES HOME TITLE

{LEAD} The Boys U-15 Blast select soccer team captured its age division in the McDonald's Soccer Festival last weekend in Norfolk. The Boys U-12 Blast and Girls U-14 Lightning took home second place trophies in the tournament.

The U-15 Blast defeated the North Worcester Warriors (Berlin, Md.), 2-1, in the championship round on goals from Johnathan Tarpley and Jason Perry.

{REST} The Blast advanced to the final by edging the Wincester Warriors (Va.), 2-1, in the semifinals. In game two the Blast tied the Orange Hurricanes, 0-0. Jason Old and Marlo Maglalang each scored in a shutout victory over the CDSA Blast team from Dover, Del.

The Boys U-12 Blast reached the finals of its division by blanking the Cary Capital Kicks (Cary, N.C.), 5-0, and MOT Red Fury (Middletown, Del.), 7-0, in games two and three of the tournament.

James Jackson led the Blast's attack against the Capital Kicks with three goals. Jason Miller and and Scott Chappell each added a goal.

Jackson scored four as the Blast routed the Fury. Joe McClelland, R.C. Milne and Miller each scored in the victory.

In the first round, McClelland scored the lone goal in a 1-1 decision between the Blast and the Wincester Wildcats.

The U-12 Blast suffered a heartbreaking loss in double overtime of the championship against the Chester-Evon Silver Bullets (Chester, Va.). At the end of regulation the score was tied, 1-1, on a Miller goal. Milne added another to tie the score, 2-2, at the end of the first overtime. After a scoreless second overtime, the game went to penalty kicks and the Blast were outscored 5-4.

The Boys U-9 Blast II squad fell in first round action to the Raliegh Bandits, 1-0, but came back in game two for a 6-0 blowout over the Churchland Cyclone. Robbie Brooke, Carl Turner and Brandon Turner each scored two goals.

In semifinal play, Blast II edged Blast I, 2-1. Brian Gilmore scored both goals in the win.

The Raleigh Bandits nipped Blast II, 4-3, in the championship match. Turner, Gilmore and Brooke each scored for Blast II.

The Girls U-14 Lightning fell to the Northeast Attack from Pennsylvania, 1-0, in the finals. Northeast Attack scored its lone goal in double overtime to secure the victory.

The Lightning advanced to the championship in a shutout victory over the Herndon Devils of Northern, Va., 2-0, on goals by Kristy Davis abd Suzanne Roebuck.

Katie Kraemer scored two and Katie Miller chipped in another to lift the Lightning over the Columbia Heracanes (Md.), 3-1. Kelly Hales scored the lone goal in the first round victory over North Carolina's Raleigh Spartan Elite.

MORE McDONALD'S: The Boys U-12 team defeated Atlantic, 2-1, on goals from Andrew Zapatero and Tony Gomez. ... The Boys U-13 Rebels shutout the Hampstead Tigers (Va.), 4-0. Jamie Beethoven and Will Scott each scored two. ... Jenna Wilson scored two goals while Laura Bigland and Kate Sawyer each chipped in another to lead the Girls U-10 Bobcats past Norfolk 4-1.

BEACH TOURNEY RESULTS: Several of Chesapeake's teams came up winners in the Virginia Beach Soccer Club's Advanced Soccer program.

The Boys U-13 Rebels edged Beach Fury, 3-1, on goals from Ben Hawkins, John Hunter and Jeffrey Bigland. ... The Girls U-14 Lightning won its division by scoring victories over Beach FC Sting, 4-1 and Beach FC Flash, 2-0. Katie Miller led the attack against the Sting with two goals, and Kelly Hales and Kristy Davis each chipped in one for the win. Kaite Kraemer scored twice in game four of the round robin tournament against the Flash. ... Two Chesapeake teams met in the U-9 finals of the Beach tournament. Blast I was led by Bryce Johnson's three goals in its 5-1 victory over Blast II. Tyler Bock chipped in two for the winners. Michael Hammonds scored the lone Blast II goal.

SELECT TRYOUTS: The Chesapeake Select Soccer Club will hold tryouts for its Travel Youth Teams for ages 8 to 18 for the 94-95 season as follows: boys born between Aug. 1, 1975 and July 31, 1981 at 6 p.m., June 8, 9 and 10 at GBHS; boys born on of after Aug. 1, 1981 at 6 p.m., June 15, 16 and 17 at GBHS; all girls at 6 p.m., June 6 and 7 at GBHS. Tryouts for boys and girls interested in Advance league play will be held June 11 and 18 at 10 a.m. at GBHS. Interested participants should bring water, a ball, shinguards and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. There will be a $1 registration fee. TENNIS TOURNAMENT SET: The City of Chesapeake, the Great Birdge Jaycees and the Chesapeake Tennis Association will host the first annual Friends of Chesapeake Infant Services Doubles Tennis Tournament to benefit the Chesapeake Infant Intervention Program the weekend of July 22-24 at the Greenbrier Park complex.

The tournament, open to the public, will feature men's, women's and mixed doubles at the 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 Open Divisions. The event officially kicks off a fund-raising campaign for the construction of a Family and Child Development Center in Chesapeake.

An entry fee of $50 per team includes a pretournament party, commemorative T-shirt and a consolation bracket to all first-round losers. Gifts and awards will be presented to all finalists. The deadline for entry is July 20.

BASEBALL CAMP: Indian River head baseball coach Steve West will hold a camp for ages 8 and up through high school juniors on June 27 through July 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Indian River Pony/Colt field off Providence Road. The clinic will cover hitting, fielding and situations. The cost is $75 with a special second child rate. A pitcher/catcher camp for beginners and veterans will be held on July 11 though the 15th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A hitting camp will begin on the same dates at 11:00 a.m. The cost for each is $45 or players can attend both for $75. FREE TICKETS: The annual Farm Fresh Youth Baseball Day sponsored by Kellogg's will be held at Harbor Park on Sunday, June 26th, as the Tides take on the Pawtucket Red Sox at 1:15 p.m. Area baseball and softball teams are eligible for up to 20 free tickets courtesy of Farm Fresh and Kellogg's. An adult representative must pick up vouchers at the third base gate at Harbor Park on Saturday, June 11 beginning at 10 a.m. The vouchers will be exchanged for tickets at the third base ticket window. Tickets will be distributed as long as supplies last.
