But the two leaders in duckpins and the women's front-runner in tenpins show no signs of faltering. For the third year in a row the same three bowlers remain at the head of the pack.
{REST} Jon Stites has vaulted to the top in men's tenpins for the 1993-94 season. Last year the No. 1 ranked male tenpinner was David Cupp. Two years ago it was Rich Finnigan. Cupp won in 1991 and Gil Brown was No. 1 in 1990. Mike Luck led the field in 1989.
Fran Sansone continues as the premier woman tenpinner. Tiger Baker and Dot King remain atop the duckpin rankings.
Following are Around the Alleyways rankings based upon nominations and a compilation of averages provided by league secretaries:
TENPINS MEN
Once upon a time a 200-average bowler was a rarity locally, but 48 bowlers carried averages over that total this season. A combined average of 207 was required to even gain mention among the year's standouts.
Stites had an overall 212 for four leagues to gain top honors. He posted averages of 223, 216, 207 and 202 to climb from the No. 9 spot a year ago.
Last year Stites had averages of 222, 206 and 194 for an overall 207.
Todd Allred was edged from the top berth by less than a pin, averaging 211.5 for four leagues. Allred was not ranked at all last year with an even 200 average for four leagues. This season the area's premier 300-game shooter had marks of 219, 211, 208 and 208.
Cupp dropped from first to third place with a 210.5 average. He posted averages of 212 and 209. Cupp also placed third two years ago.
Earl Stutz, with a combined mark of 209.6, grabbed the fourth position. Stutz registered averages of 214, 209 and 206. Stutz was another who was unranked a year ago, averaging 200 in three leagues.
With averages of 210 and 208, Jack Gray rounded out the All-Metro first team. Gray also was unranked last year.
The second unit includes five bowlers bracketed at 208. Bob Shesler grabbed No. 6 with 208.8. He had averages of 213, 212, 205 and 205. Unranked last year, Shesler had a five-league mark of 202.
Rodney Moody, who had a pair of 300 games during the year, vaulted into the No. 7 spot at 208.3. Moody was unranked last year with a two-league 183. This season he had averages of 216, 210 and 199.
Behind averages of 215, 214, 206 and 198, Danny Mausolf placed eighth at 208.25. Mausolf was ranked No. 2 last season with an overall 214.
Climbing into ninth place was Chuck Richey with averages of 2ll and 205 for an overall 208. Richey had only a 187 average last year and was not ranked.
Tenth went to Tony Petrello, also at 208 with leagues of 210 and 206. He had 201 and 200 last year and was not ranked.
Tom Linton, Larry Martinez and Chris Baron topped the honorable mentions at 207. Other bowlers accorded honorable mention included Dan Renstrom, Kevin Kelly, Rich Finnigan, Jeff Harrison, George Ensor, Chris Clifford, Dean Garrett and David Fletcher.
WOMEN
Sansone wasn't able to match her achievements of 1993 when she became the first local woman bowler to hold an overall 200 average. But she remains the area's No. 1 female scorer for the third straight year and for the fourth time in five years.
Sansone had averages of 199 and 194 for an overall 196.6.
Carolyn Cotterell, No. 1 three years ago and ranked second the past two seasons, continued in the runner-up position with averages of 196 and 192 for an overall 194.
Moving into third place was Renita Rock with an overall 191.5 behind averages of 196 and 187. Rock was not ranked last year with a five-league 179.
For the third consecutive year Andrea Thorpe pulled down the No. 4 position. Thorpe had averages of 194, 187 and 185 for 188.7. A year ago she averaged 185.
The other first-team position went to Carrie Paisley, probably the area's most active bowler. At 175 a year ago, she was unranked. This year she had 194, 193, 190, 185 and 180 in five leagues and subbed in several others, posting an overall 188.4.
Steadily climbing, Dori Gribok placed sixth at 188.3. She had league marks of 191, 187 and 187. Gribok was seventh last year and an honorable mention the previous season.
Seventh was taken by Regina Cullom at 188 behind averages of 189 and 187. Cullom was unranked last year, finishing with an overall 174.
At 187.5 with averages of 191 and 184, Dee Foust was eighth. She was an honorable mention last year.
The No. 9 finisher at 184.5 was Dawn Leonard, another bowler who did not rank last season. She averaged 179 a year ago. Leonard had averages of 186 and 183.
Squeezing into the No. 10 position was single-league participant Jody Slagel with a 189. She is another newcomer to the rankings.
The honorable mentions included Donna Luck, Teri Jeske, Rosita Padilla, Irene Davis, Pam Westfall, Amy Yuhas, Sharon Borgeson, Barbara Chavis, Dot Dy and Gina Forehand.
DUCKPINS
MEN
Baker has a stranglehold on the top spot, claiming the crown for the fourth year in a row. He had averages of 143, 142 and 141 in three leagues. The overall 142 was very similar to his total a year ago when he had 143 and 140 in a pair of leagues.
The nearest three challengers all averaged out at 138. Ronnie Sult, boasting 141 in one league, took the No. 2 position. Sult jumped from a No. 8 ranking last year.
Sharing third and fourth were Jimmie Coiner and Larry Cubilla. Coiner, No. 2 last year, was an honorable mention just two seasons back. Cubilla was not ranked last season. He was eighth two years ago.
With averages of 138 and 137, Donnie Long placed fifth. He was sixth a year ago, second the two previous seasons and No. 1 in 1990.
Jimmy Boswell also moved up one notch - from seventh to sixth. Boswell had averages of 138 and 135.
The next three positions went to overall 136 averages. Walter Laughon, with a high league of 139, placed seventh. Laughon advanced from ninth and is another former No. 1 ranked bowler.
Tim Hux and David Campbell, both with marks of 137 and 135 in two leagues, shared the eighth and ninth positions. Hux was No. 3 last year and Campbell was 10th.
David Driskell slipped ahead of Pete Cubilla, Joe Rabel and Walt Drury for the No. 10 berth. Driskell had an overall 135 for two leagues. He was an honorable mention last year.
Drury was fourth last year. Pete Cubilla and Rabel were honorable mentions.
Also getting honorable mention this year were Raymond Askew and Ronnie Ketchum.
WOMEN
Now solidly entrenched as the queen of the lanes in duckpins, King breezed to the No. 1 ranking with a pair of 129 leagues. She was second ranked for two years before moving to the head of the pack for the third straight year.
King had 131 and 130 last year.
Kendra Allen slipped from 132 in a single league to 126 but managed to retain the No. 2 ranking. Two years ago she was fifth.
Third place went to Willie Sraver, who was fourth last year and No. 2 the previous season. Sraver had averages of 127, 125 and 123 for an overall 125.
Lynne Harris, at 124, captured the No. 4 spot. She was sixth last year, fourth in 1992 and seventh in 1991.
The other first-team member was Lynette Narciso with an overall 123 for two leagues. Narciso had 127 a year ago and ranked third.
The second-unit was headed by Trudy Walker at 122. Walker is a newcomer to the rankings.
Suffolk's Mary Underwood advanced to No. 7, jumping from 10th place a year ago. She had averages of 120 and 119, slightly better than her overall 119 last season.
At No. 8, Hope Shull had averages of 120 and 118. Shull, No. 1 ranked in 1991, was seventh a year ago with 123 and 119.
Robin Driskell placed ninth with an overall 118 for two leagues. She was not ranked last season.
The No. 10 berth went to Marie Bright, also at 118. Bright was eighth last year and unranked the previous season. She averaged 120 last year.
Six other bowlers, topped by Marilyn Meath with 117.5 for two leagues and Martha Rush with 117 for two, were accorded honorable mentions. These included Sharon Reaves, Jane Atwood, Joann Cubilla and Georgia Dingle. Atwood was ranked fifth last year and Cubilla was ranked ninth. Rush, Reaves and Dingle repeated as honorable mentions. Meath was not ranked last year.
