7-MONTH-OLD, TEEN DIE IN CHESAPEAKE WRECK

{LEAD} A 7-month-old girl riding in her mother's lap was one of two people killed in a one-car accident Saturday at a curve along an isolated stretch of Elbow Road.

Four other people in the car also were injured, three of them seriously. Only the infant was not wearing a restraining device, police said. All other occupants of the car had their seat belts on.

{REST} The car was westbound just after midnight in the 2700 block of Elbow Road, near the Stumpy Lake Golf Course, when it missed a curve and hit a ditch, police said.

The car, a late-model Mazda, apparently became airborne and landed in the eastbound lanes of Elbow Road, police said.

The stretch of the road where the crash occurred is heavily wooded and sparsely populated, police said. A passing motorist who noticed the wreckage notified a resident in the 1700 block of Elbow Road, who called police.

Lora Barraza, 18, was sitting in the front passenger seat with her 7-month-old daughter, Lydia, in her lap when the accident occurred. Police said the child was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

The mother was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital with minor injuries and was expected to be released Saturday evening, police said.

Also killed in the accident was a 15-year-old girl who was riding in the back seat. Police are withholding her name pending notification of relatives.

The driver of the car, 21-year-old Salvador Barraza - Lora Barraza's brother-in-law - was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and later transferred to Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was expected to undergo surgery Saturday evening for multiple fractures, police said.

A 9-year-old boy who also was riding in the back seat was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and later transferred to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, where he was listed in critical but stable condition Saturday evening.

A 15-year-old boy, identified as Lora Barraza's brother, was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital, where he is listed in satisfactory condition. His name was not available.
