250 CIVILIANS TO LOSE JOBS

{LEAD} The Navy plans to cut 250 civilian jobs at Yorktown Naval Weapons Station by Nov. 18, according to a service memorandum sent to members of Congress.

The move is part of a broad reduction in force affecting up to 4,402 Navy civilians at 47 installations across the country.

{REST} The memo also confirms Friday's news of job cuts at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair office at Newport News Shipbuilding. It says 49 jobs will be cut there by Sept. 30.

Seven workers also will lose their jobs by the same date at the Navy Guided Missile School at Dam Neck in Virginia Beach.

The Navy memo predicted that 70 weapons station employees would accept cash incentives, which would force the station to lay off 180 employees.

According to a weapons station statement, nearly 300 employees have accepted cash payments in return for voluntarily resigning their jobs during the past 18 months.
