HYLTON DEFLATES COX, 4-0

{LEAD} Hylton High, defending its state title before a noisy home-field crowd, weaved its midfield magic again and beat Cox, 4-0, in the Group AAA championship game.

Senior Kevin Terne scored two goals and had an assist and senior keeper Danny Britton made six saves as Hylton ran its home winning streak to 34 games.

{REST} ``The crowd was a big factor,'' Terne said. ``We play with a lot of confidence here.''

Hylton (21-1-2) led only 1-0 at halftime, but Cox coach Jim Snodgrass already felt the game slipping away.

``Frankly, in the first 20 minutes I thought we had as many or more good chances,'' Snodgrass said. ``If we had scored then, I think it would've been different.''

Cox's best chance came about nine minutes in, when Britton hugged the near post and stopped Matt Quinter on a breakaway up the right wing.

Shortly afterward, Cox's Josh Haggerty reinjured the leg that had sidelined him for three weeks. In the ensuing delay, the Falcons lost their intensity, Snodgrass said.

Three minutes after the restart, Terne delivered a touch pass to Arlo King pushing up the center of the box. Cox keeper Ross Brockwell came out to challenge him and the two collided. Brockwell went down and the shot went in. Cox (16-3-2) never regained the momentum.

Ten minutes into the second half, Mat Kalbffleisch flicked a cross to Terne, unmarked on the right wing. His quick shot inside the near post never gave Brockwell a chance.

``That was a great combination goal. It crushed us,'' Snodgrass said. ``But they are not four goals better. They are a couple better.''

Hylton was able to widen the gap by playing great defense on Cox's Matt Whalen, who was shut out for only the second time in eight postseason games.

Whalen made a great rush around the defender in the first half only to have his low, hard shot gobbled up by Britton.

Then, after Hylton went up, 2-0, Whalen tried to sneak a low shot on a direct free kick between the four-man wall and the post. Britton saved that one too.

``It's quite depressing,'' Whalen said.

Hylton broke it open on a cheap goal by Terne 14 minutes into the second half. Brockwell had the angle measured and went down to stop the shot, but the ball squirted through him and into the net.

Brian Tice capped the scoring on a run up the middle against backup keeper Andrew Pelton in the final two minutes.

No team has won three consecutive boys state titles and Hylton will lose seven starters to graduation. But Hylton coach Ken Krieger thinks he might be sitting on a budding dynasty.

``We've got a great JV team coming up,'' Krieger said. ``A three-peat or four-peat is not out of the question.''

NOTES: Hylton is only the third Group AAA team to win the championship on its home field. Woodbridge (boys and girls) also did it. . . . Next year's championships are scheduled for Salem High in Virginia Beach. by CNB
