MAN, FAMILY AWARDED $2.4 MILLION IN ASBESTOS SUIT

{LEAD} A former Owens-Corning Fiberglass Co. employee and the family of another worker were awarded $2.4 million in a federal lawsuit against the company for injuries caused by exposure to asbestos.

The award came last week after a trial in U.S. District Court in Wilmington.

{REST} Raleigh lawyer Spencer Parris said his clients, Jimmy Jones and Sam Culverhouse, each worked for about 20 years at the Babcock & Wilcox plant in Wilmington.

Jones died from asbestosis and lung cancer in 1991. His family was awarded $1.3 million.

Culverhouse, who also suffers from asbestosis and lung cancer, is in failing health. He's not counting his $1.1 million yet.

``Well, I haven't saw anything,'' he said.

The cases probably will be appealed.
