GEORGE W. BROWN SR.

{LEAD} George W. Brown Sr., 70, of the 1400 block of W. Carson Crescent, died June 6, 1994, in Sentara Nursing Center.

He was born in Inez, N.C., and was a member and minister of Providence A.M.E. Zion Church. He had founded and owned Brown's Carpet Center, Inc., from which he had retired after 45 years. Within the church, his works included the construction of a new chapel, presiding as the Sunday school superintendent, singing in the male choir and acting as head of the Christian Board of Education for a number of years. He was also a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.

{REST} He is survived by his wife, Irene C. Brown; one son, George W. Brown Jr. of Portsmouth; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter; a daughter-in-law, Leola Brown of Portsmouth; a niece reared as a daughter, Tarry H. Moody of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Josephine Brown of Virginia Beach; six brothers-in-law; and host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in Providence A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, with military honors. Viewing will be at Corprew Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Thursday.
