A VIRGINIA REMEMBERS
{LEAD}
J. Robert Slaughter dodged German gunfire and the bodies of his comrades
when he hit Omaha Beach the first time. Fifty years to the day later, the
Roanoke man was strolling down to the sands of Omaha with the president of the
United States. Slaughter, President Clinton's companion during anniversary
ceremonies Monday in Normandy, found Clinton sincere in his appreciation. ``He
said the country owes the veterans a lot.'' But Clinton didn't seem
enthusiastic about the ceremonies, Slaughter said. ``I don't believe he was
really interested in D-Day. It was a photo op.'' To hear the D-Day memories of
Slaughter and other veternas, call INFOLINE at 640-5555, category 3329 (DDAY)
