WARNER'S GROWING POPULARITY

{LEAD} U.S. Sen. John W. Warner, R-Va., remains the most popular statewide politician in Virginia despite the condemnation he has received from many Republican leaders, according to a poll of 824 registered voters conducted Sunday and Monday by Mason-Dixon Political/Media Research Inc. of Columbia, Md. The survey shows that Warner is in strong shape to seek re-election in 1996.

The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

If Warner backs the independent candidacy of Coleman, some Republican party conservatives and members of the Christian Coalition have said they will oppose his renomination as the GOP candidate in 1996. Michael Farris, the 1993 Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, has expressed interest in running against Warner for the party's senate nomination. Warner has indicated that if he were to draw such opposition he would consider running for reelection as an independent. If Warner ran for reelection as an independent, would you consider voting for him?
