Butts replaces Mike Head, who resigned to accept a similar position at the new Ocean Lakes High in Virginia Beach beginning this fall.
{REST} ``We interviewed three persons and there were a lot more than that who showed interest,'' said Green Run principal Donald Stowers. ``Mark knows the program. He has the right attitude and the qualifications for the job. And I like him.''
Butts, 37, was Green Run's junior varsity coach the past two seasons after four years as head coach at Salem Junior High. He played at First Colonial High and Virginia Wesleyan College.
``You hear it and hear it,'' said Butts in reference to rumors that he was the front-runner for the position. ``But until they say it's yours, you never know. And there were quite a few applications rolling in.
``I feel I'm in a wonderful situation. We have a lot of talent coming back. We return three starters and with talented young players like Plaxico Burress, Bobby Gloss and Will Brooks, who are all rising juniors, I feel the program is in great shape.
``The two years under Mike Head were really good for me. You always feel you're ready to be a head coach, but it dawned on me that Mike thought I was ready when he handed me the defensive coaching assignments last year.''
Green Run was 17-7 last season and ranked fifth in the final area poll. The Stallions lost in the opening round of the Eastern Region playoffs.
