ROADSIDE REMINDERS MAY SAVE LIFE
{LEAD}
As a Virginia Beach resident, I must agree that city traffic engineer John
Herzke has a point when he states that the markers placed alongside Shore
Drive might pose a traffic hazard to others ("Family and city odds over
fatality markers," news, May 27). However, these markers also serve as
reminders that irresponsible driving has very serious consequences. If these
markers and reminders save even one life, and I believe they might, then the
good they offer far outweighs the minor hazard they pose.
I have seen the large flashy sign signifing the number killed along this
roadway; however, nothing drives the point home like the sobering crosses
placed on or near the spot where lives were lost. They stand as sentinels to
remind us that we must be responsible drivers.
