The seven cities in Hampton Roads along with areas in Northern Neck and the Eastern Shore as well as military installations in the region will participate with volunteers to clean 50 miles of shoreline.
{REST} Last year's effort resulted in more than 5,000 volunteers collecting over 125 tons of trash and debris.
For the past five years, the largest offender has been cigarette butts. This year's emphasis will be to create an awareness of this problem among smokers. Volunteers will distribute ash trays to beachgoers and boaters.
The objectives of Clean the Bay Day are to remove harmful and unsightly trash and debris from the waterways and to create awareness among area residents and tourists to discourage future abuse of Virginia's waterways and the Chesapeake Bay.
