YOUNG DANCERS WILL PERFORM `SLEEPING BEAUTY' BALLET SUNDAY

{LEAD} Many young dancers spent the winter taking classes and rehearsing. Now, all that work is paying off with spring recitals.

One such is The Starting Pointe, a training school directed by Tomi Short, former member of the New York City Ballet. At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the school presents Tchaikovsky's ``The Sleeping Beauty.''

{REST} Dancing the Bluebird Pas De Deux are 12 year-old student, Elisabeth Motley and local young artist, Michael Barriskill. Elisabeth, the daughter of Robert and Susan Motley, is a student at Salem Middle School. Last summer she studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts and was recently accepted into the Joffrey Ballet School. A Virginia Beach native, Barriskill teaches at the Governor's Magnet School for the Arts. He was also in the original Broadway cast of ``Cats'' and was a soloist with the Houston Ballet Company.

The program includes the jazz and tap ensembles. Admission is a $6 donation at the door. For more information, call the dance school at 471-7586.

\ BARBARA SARAH, A LOCAL PLAYWRIGHT and composer, has a duty - a mission. She's asking the community to participate.

``I completed a musical drama, ``A Girl Named Ruth,'' based on the biblical Book of Ruth,'' said Sarah, who has had several churches perform her hymns. ``The manuscript has been read and I've been told that it is very good. The problem seems to be that, because it is religious, theaters do not want to produce it.

``What I'd like to do is make this a community project,'' she said. ``In addition to singers, we would also need a director, costumes, scenery. All the proceeds would be given to whatever cause everyone decided on. Wouldn't there be people willing to help produce and present it?''

For more information, Sarah may be contacted at P.O. Box 68701, Virginia Beach, Va., 23455.
