HARD WORK NETS COX NEW BAND UNIFORMS

{LEAD} After a year of spaghetti dinners, music grams, solicitations, drum-a-thons, and candy, fruit and yard sales, Cox High School band students and parents have finally earned the $18,000 needed to buy new band uniforms.

And not just any uniform. ``These new uniforms are so neat,'' raved band parent Barbara Villers, as she described the emerald green jacket, white pants, gold cummerbund, sash and black brimmed hat band members will wear next season.

{REST} The old uniforms were at least 10 years old, said Villers, secretary of the boosters. ``When you'd put on the shirt, the lining would rip on them.''

She said the fabric was old and style obsolete. ``My daughter doesn't like me to use the word dorky, but . . . ''

Kyle Flohre, a ninth-grader, said he likes the new uniforms much better.

Not only do they look better, but the zippers don't rip off and the pants aren't itchy.

The new uniforms should arrive in September. The band members can't wait.

``We don't want to wear these anymore,'' Flohre said.
