CLEAN THE BAY DAY\

{LEAD} The abundant rivers, inlets, canals and wetlands that lap at Chesapeake's shores give so much pleasure that it's a privilege, not a chore, to devote a few hours each year to caring for them.

Obviously, others feel the same sense of responsibility. The Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council's periodic calls for volunteers to participate in ``Clean the Bay Day'' never go unanswered. Last year, many tons of trash were removed from the city's waters and shoreline during the region-wide clean-up effort.

{REST} Now, it's time to do it again.

This Saturday, June 11, between 9 a.m. and noon another army of volunteers is being raised to scour local waterways on foot and in small boats, picking up unsightly debris and hauling it away. They'll convene at Great Bridge Lock Park, Deep Creek Lock Park, Elizabeth River Boat Landing and Northwest River Park before fanning out to cover as much of the city's long shoreline as possible.

It's a useful and rewarding way to spend a Saturday morning. Consider being a part of it.
