TEN OF 11 COX STARTERS MAKE TEAM\

{LEAD} GROUP AAA BOYS soccer runner-up Cox showed its prowess this season both on the field and in balloting for the All-Beach District team.

The Falcons placed 10 of 11 starters on either first, second or honorable mention teams - six on the first team.

{REST} Leading the way for Cox Matt Whalen, the Virginia High School League Coaches Association Group AAA player of the year.

The Falcons junior, ``Mr. Everything,'' played three positions during the season, leading Cox to the state runner-up trophy. He scored 22 goals - 10 in postseason play.

``What can you say,'' coach Jim Snodgrass said.

Joining Whalen on the first sqaud are teammates Ross Brockwell, Rodney Stoltz, Ben Speckhart, Josh Haggerty and Matt Quinter. Filling the other five positions were Dan Zickefoose of Kempsville, Jeremey Lehr of Kellam, Jeff Samuel of Salem, Danny McVey of Tallwood and Garrit Benson of First Colonial.

Missing from any of the teams is First Colonial national pool player Wade Barrett, who missed much of the season because of illness.

Brockwell allowed only one goal in district play, finishing with a regular-season goals-against-average of 0.1.

Snodgrass said Stoltz - the only other member of the coaches state team - is ``arguably the best sweeper in the state.'' He scored three goals on penalty kicks.

Speckhart is the second half of Cox's central defense with Stoltz, playing the stopper position. The junior plays as an ``attacking stopper'' according to Snodgrass - making several field-length runs. He scored two goals.

Haggerty's loss to injury caused Cox a load of problems. At the midfield position, he used what Snodgrass called the ``best dribbling skills I've ever coached'' to set up the Falcons offense. The senior scored four goals and had four assists.

Quinter, a sophomore forward, was Whalen's complimentary player on the front line.

Zickefoose, a senior forward, led Kempsville with 10 goals and six assists. He set the school career record for game-winning goals with 18.

Benson, a senior midfielder, took over for Barrett and finished with five goals and six assists.

McVey, a junior forward, was the leading scorer in the area with 28 goals and six assists.
