In Norfolk's Granby High School newspaper, The Spectator, editor Pavar Snipe shared some startling facts about teen pregnancy - it's the leading reason that girls drop out of school, 79 percent of these children live in poverty, and 90 percent of inmates in U.S. prisons were born to teen mothers.
{REST} ``There is hardly a class at our school that doesn't contain one or more teen parents,'' Pavar wrote.
School violence made headlines in Manteo High School's Sound to Sea, when 183 students were surveyed for an article by staff writer Miles Danels. The survey revealed that 93 percent of students do not feel the school has a problem with weapons. However, 7 out of 10 students admitted they know someone who has carried a weapon to school.
Chesapeake's Western Branch High students had a more attractive paper this May when The Branch switched printers. The new and improved paper featured five articles about rain forests by reporters Trixie Poole and Jennifer Sajko. A poll of 50 students revealed that 90 percent think rain forests should be preserved, but only 10 percent are knowledgeable about them.
Insight, Lake Taylor's newspaper, reported results of a survey of 100 Norfolk students about year-round school - 100 percent agreed that school should not continue during the summer months, according to Jennifer Riddle, editor. by CNB
