He was a native of Portsmouth, a retired structural engineer at Newport News Shipyard and owned and operated S & S Homes, Portsmouth. He was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth; America Fellowship Masonic Lodge (NU)148; and Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies.
{REST} Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Smith; one daughter, Sandra S. Mitchell of Portsmouth; one son, Waverly C. ``Smitty'' Smith III of Portsmouth; three stepdaughters, JoAnne Willey of Chesapeake, Patty Thomas and Kelly Davis, both of Portsmouth; one stepson, Rick Strickland of Huntersville, N.C.; two sisters, Gerry Lorber and Nancy Frahm, both of Portsmouth; one brother, Jimmy Smith of Suffolk, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and a stepmother, Mildren Rhyne of Suffolk.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Monumental United Methodist Church by the Rev. Arthur W. Wingfield. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites at the grave. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to the Youth Group of Centenary United Methodist Church or to Monumental United Methodist Church.
